- —Celestial Madonna[src]
The Celestial Madonna was the mother of the Star Child. She was the first Celestial to become pregnant and deliver a baby, although the process destroyed her. She gave birth in the Sun.[2]
History
The Celestial Madonna is a Celestial who may or may not have originated during the time of the First Cosmos; however, what is known is that Celestials' counterparts across the Multiverse are interconnected aspects of themselves and not separate beings. Thus, the Celestial Madonna of Earth-616 is one aspect of the true Celestial Madonna.[3]
Earth-616[]
The Celestial Madonna appeared in 114 AD at the palace of Zhang Heng in Luoyang. Zhang went to her, flattering her.[4] She revealed to him the existence of the Celestial Egg existing within Earth, and revealed as well that she was carrying a child, something "new/unique/forbidden." The birth would destroy her, a sacrifice she was willing to make, but she would need nourishment. As she was hesitating between using Earth, causing quick extinction, or the Moon, with cataclysmic consequences on Earth, Zhang Heng proposed an alternative: the Sun.[2]
Bathing herself in the star, she was destroyed by the birthing process and her progeny, the Star Child, was retrieved by Leonardo da Vinci in 1956.[2] Her body stayed there. Leonid, ascended by the Human Machine, later teleported himself, Michelangelo, and Sir Isaac Newton inside her empty womb to settle their conflict.[5]
Notes
- According to this Celestial, Celestials are born by implanting Celestial eggs/embryos inside worlds.[2] However, the Celestial birth from Mighty Thor #424 shows a Celestial being constructed and then born by collapsing an entire galaxy into it.
- The idea of Celestials being born inside planets originally came from Earth X, which is set in its own continuity.
- This Celestial is not named in the story, but the title of S.H.I.E.L.D. #4 calls her the Celestial Madonna and her child the Star Child. The latter is the name used for the Star Child in the story.
Trivia
- She states that reproduction is "imminent" in 114 but does not give birth until 1956, 1842 years later.[2]
