History

The original Myrmidon was the robot guardian of the Overseer, a super-computer built to subjugate the population of a Caribbean island on behalf of its dictator. When Iron Man came to destroy it, he was confronted by Myrmidon. The pair fought until Iron Man was able to reprogram the Overseer and the robot to attack and destroy each other.[1]

The remains of the Myrmidon and the Overseer were impounded by S.H.I.E.L.D. and stored aboard the Helicarrier Adjunct. Years later, during Hydra's takeover of the United States, the Overseer was brought back online by Veronica Eden as part of her plan to wipe out all super heroes, super villains, and anybody who posed a threat to mankind. This operation also saw Myrmidon rebuilt several times into a small army.[2]

The Myrmidons and the Overseer laid dormant after Eden's plans were postponed by her failure to take the reins of Hydra.[3] A rookie group of vigilantes named the Paladins was also affected by this, since they were set to take part in staged fights with Hydra. The Paladins knew of the Myrmidons from Eden and broke into the Adjunct to reactivate one of the units, so they could manufacture a threat to defeat. The Myrmidon chased them off, and reactivated the Overseer, who in turn reactivated the Myrmidon army.[2]

Afterward, the Paladin Fifty-One embarked in a quest to stop the Myrmidon, but he had been framed by his teammates as a villain. Iron Man and Captain America were led to believe by the Paladins that Fifty-One intended to activate the Myrmidon, and the heroes attempted to stop him.[4] After being apprehended by Iron Man and Captain America, Eden led them to the Adjunct to find Fifty-One, but she turned against them to disclose her alliance with the Overseer. In turn, the super-computer betrayed Eden to reveal its intention to subjugate all of humanity. It captured Eden and unleashed the Myrmidons on the heroes.[3] The Myrmidons pursued both Captain America aboard the Adjunct and Iron Man after he fled the ship to seek medical aid for Fifty-One.[2] The Overseer was finally stopped when Fifty-One returned to the Helicarrier and assimilated himself into the computer, overriding the Overseer's consciousness with his own. Afterward, Fifty-One sent the Myrmidons away.[5]
