Bast, or Bastet (Ancient Egyptian: bꜣstjt), is a psychopomp goddess and Ennead worshiped in Wakanda and Ancient Egypt. Bast is also a member of the Council of Godheads.

Biography[]

Aiding Bashenga[]

According to Wakandan legend, when the five tribes fought for control of Wakanda, Bashenga received a vision from Bast, which led him to the Heart-Shaped Herb, granting him the power to become the king and the first Black Panther.^[1] In Wakandan lore, when the soul of a man reaches the afterlife, it is brought by the goddesses Bast and Sekhmet to a mythical green veldt, where they can run freely and in peace for all eternity.^[2] T'Chaka believed in this myth, while his son T'Challa apparently did not, until he met his father in the Ancestral Plane.^[1]

Council of Godheads[]

In 2025, Bast was present in her human form in Omnipotence City at a meeting of the gods. She witnessed when Thor, Valkyrie, Mighty Thor and Korg sat in seats behind her and as Thor bought warning of the threat posed by Gorr the God Butcher. The other gods, including Bast, led by Zeus, were dismissive, as they were safe in the city beyond Gorr's reach.^[3]

- Power Bestowal: It is presumed that Bast was responsible for the creation of the Heart-Shaped Herb, the plant that gives the holders of the mantle of "Black Panther" their powers.
- Telepathy: Bast was able to show Bashenga a vision of the Heart-Shaped Herb.
- Transformation: Bast is able to change her form. Bast assumes a humanoid form when she go to Omnipotence City.
- Immortality: As an Ennead, Bast is immortal.

Facilities[]

Omnipotence City: Bast was in Omnipotence City in 2025 when Thor, Valkyrie, Jane Foster, and Korg asked for help fighting Gorr the God Butcher. Bast dismissed the request along with Zeus and the rest, believing themselves to be safe.
Ancestral Plane: Bast is able to access the Ancestral Plane.

Trivia[]

In the comics, Bast was the protector of the Panther Clan and is also referred to as the "Panther God". She was the one who gave Bashenga, and the rest of his lineage, the power of the Black Panther and control over Wakanda.
- Also in the comics, Bast is related to Khonshu and Sekhmet.
Historically, Bastet is an Egyptian cat goddess connected with the sun, then the moon in the Ptolemaic era. She was initially depicted as a lioness, then as a domestic cat in later stages of Egyptian history.
