"What's a raccoon?"
"'What's a raccoon?' It's what you are, stupid."
―Rocket and Star-Lord[src]

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are a mammalian species native to North America.

History[]

Taken from Earth[]

Rocket Raccoon[]

Multiple raccoons were acquired by High Evolutionary from Earth, so he could use them as test subjects. High Evolutionary conducted a series of experiments on one, labeled as 89P13, which led to him gaining sentience. 89P13's brain developed beyond High Evolutionary's expectations, as he managed to figure out the key to the accelerated evolution, that High Evolutionary was struggling with.

However, High Evolutionary still deemed Batch 89 as unfitting for his vision and ordered to dispose of them, while planning to thoroughly analyze 89P13's brain. 89P13 ended up escaping from High Evolutionary and became a mercenary, known as Rocket, as he was unaware of what raccoons are.[1]

Free From Experimentation[]

In 2026, when the Guardians of the Galaxy attacked High Evolutionary's laboratory, Rocket found a cell with his test subjects and found a bunch of baby raccoons. Noticing that they look just like him, Rocket opened the cell then noticed a tag that said that they're from Earth and were raccoons. Seeing this, Rocket realized that Quill had been right about him being a raccoon. Not wanting the young raccoons and the rest of the animals go through the same thing he did, Rocket decided to rescue them. Before he could, Rocket was confronted by High Evolutionary as he attacked him. Having accepted his identity as a raccoon, Rocket told High Evolutionary that he wasn't his subject anymore and his true name. After defeating High Evolutionary with the help of the Guardians, Rocket and his teammates freed the young raccoons and the rest of the animals then brought them to Knowhere. Once brought to Knowhere, the young raccoons quickly settle into their new home.[1]
