The Rescue in Afterlife was a mission undertaken by S.H.I.E.L.D., with help from the Inhuman Gordon, to rescue other Afterlife's Inhumans from Nathaniel Malick's Crew.

Background[]

In the aftermath of the timeline alterations caused by the ongoing war between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Chronicoms, Nathaniel Malick survived and became obsessed by the idea of acquiring superhuman abilities and spreading anarchy in the world. He therefore captured Daisy Johnson and stole her powers,^[2] and decided to ally with Sibyl, the predictor of the Chronicoms, to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D., using knowledge provided by the Time Stream to get ahead of them.^[3]

Among the timeline changes that Malick sought to cause in order to get the upper hand over S.H.I.E.L.D. was the survival of Kora, the first daughter of Johnson's mother Jiaying. Malick convinced her not to commit suicide out of fear of her Inhuman powers and instead to let them free. He then initiated an attack on Afterlife, where Kora used to be held, resulting in the capture of many Inhumans. Jiaying, however, was able to escape with Gordon thanks to S.H.I.E.L.D., who promised that they would help them.^[4] Making good on that promise, they brought Jiaying and Gordon to the Lighthouse and planned a rescue operation at Afterlife.^[1]

Rescue[]

S.H.I.E.L.D. decided to send a team comprising of Alphonso Mackenzie, Phil Coulson and Yo-Yo Rodriguez to Afterlife, assisted by Gordon, who would help them infiltrate the compound, while Jiaying would remain safe at the Lighthouse. The team thus took a Quinjet to Nepal in order to approach Afterlife. It was decided that Coulson and Gordon would go in first and locate the Inhuman prisoners before returning so that S.H.I.E.L.D. could initiate the rescue mission.

However, immediately upon teleporting inside the Afterlife's facility, Gordon and Coulson were captured, with Gordon being grievously wounded in the process by Nathaniel Malick's Crew, since they had used the Time Stream to predetermine where they would arrive. Gordon was then forced to be the subject of an experiment during which his teleportation powers were transferred into a younger version of Coulson's former nemesis, John Garrett, who had been recruited by Malick shortly after Kora.

Coulson and Gordon were imprisoned in a room designed to contain the most powerful Inhumans. Since they could not escape through conventional means, Gordon chose to use the last of his strengths to teleport Coulson and himself out, before dying from exhaustion. Coulson found the room where the Inhumans were held hostage, guarded by Durant, and was quickly joined by Mackenzie and Rodriguez.

Using her superhuman speed, Rodriguez quickly took down Durant, turning the knife he had manifested against him. She and Mackenzie were able to rescue the Inhumans that had been captured and brought them on their Quinjet. Meanwhile, Coulson was sent to find Kora, who was incapacitated with an I.C.E.R. after expressing her desire to meet Daisy Johnson. The unconscious Kora was then taken to the Quinjet as well so that she could be brought to the Lighthouse.^[1]

Aftermath[]

Using John Garrett's newly acquired teleportation powers that had been harvested from Gordon, Nathaniel Malick was able to infiltrate into the Lighthouse. In the ensuing confrontation against S.H.I.E.L.D., Jiaying was killed by Malick, while Jemma Simmons was kidnapped by Garrett.^[1]

The Inhumans that been rescued from Afterlife were taken to a hospital so they could be properly taken care of. Kora was kept prisoner at the Lighthouse, where she surprised everyone by expressing the desire to become an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. by detailing a plan suggesting to take out several lives to preserve many others, and to talk with her alternate half-sister Daisy Johnson.^[5]
