History[]
Joining the Axis[]
- "The Reich shall win because we are unified. In blood as in purpose. While our enemies...are the polyglot peasants of Europe and the mongrel masses of North America."
- âColonel Lohmer[src]
By early 1941, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria had joined the Axis powers during World War II, aligning with Nazi Germany.[1]
Communist Regime[]
- "Under the communist regime, public gatherings were prohibited in Bucharest, and people were forced to meet in private homes or secret clubs."
- âJemma Simmons[src]
During the Romanian communist regime, public gatherings were not allowed in Bucharest, forcing the people to meet in their homes or to form secret clubs across the city. Some of those clubs remained active after the end of the regime, sometimes hosting illegal meetings.[2]
Cold War[]
During the Cold War, CIA sent Nick Fury on a mission in Bucharest.[3]
Transhumanists Meeting[]
- "So, where is Dr. Radcliffe?"
"We think Romania, but his exact whereabouts are unknown." - âPhil Coulson and Jemma Simmons[src]
During the Romanian communist regime, the government deemed public socialization and organization of the Transhumanist group, a biologically augmenting society of human individuals, illegal. As a result, the determined Transhumanists continued their research and regular conventions underground, at times, forming black markets to share their work. After the governmental reformation, from a communist to a democratic state, Transhumanists were able to freely express themselves and their modern ideals and thus regularly met in Bucharest to exchange ideas and technology.[2]
Adoption of Razor Fist[]
Xu Wenwu traveled to Romania for business purposes. During his visit, he found a child named Mattias who had lost his right hand, but was able to juggle three balls with his remaining arm. Wenwu took a liking to Mattias since he reminded him of his son Shang-Chi, and decided to adopt him.[4]
Nightmares of the Past[]
Winter Soldier went into hiding and visited the Smithsonian Institution's Captain America Exhibit. While there, he found a memorial for a Howling Commando named James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes who had seemingly been killed during World War II while fighting HYDRA.[5] Afterwards, Barnes traveled to an old Romanian safehouse to investigate, all the while haunted by nightmares of his past.[6]
Avengers Civil War[]
Capture of Bucky Barnes[]
- "Barnes would have been eliminated in Romania if it wasn't for Rogers."
- âThaddeus Ross to Tony Stark[src]
In 2016, Bucky Barnes had fled to Bucharest and settled in an apartment. While walking through the city, he discovered he was being accused of a bombing and returned home. When he arrived, he found Steve Rogers waiting for him. Rogers told him he was there to assist him and their reunion was interrupted by the arrival of the GSG 9. Barnes escaped onto the roof and was confronted by T'Challa, in his Panther Habit, and went on the run from him. Barnes escaped through a tunnel and stole a motorcycle. However, he, T'Challa, Rogers, and Sam Wilson were eventually caught by the GSG 9 and James Rhodes.[7]
Flag Smashers' Political Ultimatum[]
Following the Blip, the Global Repatriation Council set up a refugee camp in Bucharest. In 2024, the Flag Smashers targeted that camp on their campaign.[8]
