"The guy said that you wouldn't leave Coulson's side, but the way you're always staring at me... Did you kill him? Oh. It's the other thing. Okay. Okay, now we're getting somewhere. And he died. So sad."
―Sarge to Melinda May

The Other Thing is the fifth episode of the sixth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Synopsis[]

Sarge has May; Atarah has Daisy, Enoch and Simmons; and now, there are two planets that need saving.

Plot[]

Melinda May, who has been captured by Sarge's Squad, experiences flashbacks of the time spent with Phil Coulson on Tahiti. Once Sarge sends Snowflake hunt down another one of their targets, May remains alone with him as they discuss Coulson, the relationship he had with May, and how he died. May insists that Sarge is merely a copy of Coulson that was created through unknown means, while Sarge refuses to believe that Coulson was anything other than an articifial copy of himself since Sarge states he has been living for centuries. Sarge tells May that he will win her to his side. Snowflake returns after having successfully captured an individual, who is soon executed by Sarge.

Sarge and Snowflake then lock up May with the corpse, and as May unlocks her handcuffs, the body is reanimated and attacks her. May notices a bat-like creature trying to get out of the body to enter through her mouth. She intensely fights against the corpse, and manages to defeat him. However, massive crystal spikes protrude out of the body, threatening to kill her. May thus picks up a knife left by Sarge and stabs the body in the chest, stopping the process. Sarge praises May for having done the right thing and explains what he had been doing: hunting down the creatures, named the Shrike, across the galaxy to stop them from destroying planets.

As Sarge returns to drive his truck, May remains alone with Snowflake, and manages to trick her to approach and knock her unconscious. She then attacks Sarge as he is still driving, attempting to strangle him. However, Sarge puts up a good fight, and May is nearly killed herself. She still finds the strength to fight back, letting all of her frustration erupt after having interacted with someone with the face of the man she loved. Eventually, Sarge is overwhelmed by May who knocks him out and takes control of the truck, proceeding to bring them to custody.

At the Lighthouse, S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Alphonso Mackenzie coordinates the search for May, all the while trying to comfort Yo-Yo Rodriguez after the death of Damon Keller, although it is made difficult by Mackenzie's new position and how they ended their relationship. Rodriguez also feels that Marcus Benson has a part of accountability in Keller's death, prompting Mackenzie to talk with him. However, Benson insists that the Shrike-related incident was unpredictable. Later, Benson talks with Rodriguez, and they bond over the hard choices that they made, with Benson recalling the death of his husband.

As Benson presents the results of his analysis, Rodriguez recognizes that the structure of the crystals generated by the Shrike matches the Monoliths'. Although Benson is careful, he admits that Keller's theory based on the existence of Ley lines to the intersection of which the Shrike were converging could make sense. Recalling the word "Pachakutiq" mentioned by Tinker, Benson does some research and later requests permission to go to YucatĂĄn and South America to investigate.

In space, Enoch laments over the recent capture of Leo Fitz by Malachi. Soon after Daisy Johnson and Jemma Simmons attempt to cheer him up, the Zephyr One is confronted to a fleet of Confederate Destroyer Ships. Although they believed to be under attack by the Remorath, the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents discover that the ships are crewed by the Chronicom Hunters led by Atarah. Atarah, who captures the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and brings them to her ship, explains that the Chronicom homeworld, Chronyca-2, has been obliterated, and she seeks to perform time travel to restore it.

Atarah thus interrogates the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to know more about their own time travel experience, threatening to have Fitz executed if they do not comply. She is dissatisfied with their answers, but Enoch urges her not to kill them, and reveals that Fitz could find a way to create a time travel method if Simmons is put in harm's way. Refusing to give up, the S.H.I.E.L.D. team attempts to escape, but are outnumbered by the Chronicoms. Facing impossible odds, Simmons decides to turn herself over to the Chronicoms in exchange for her friends' life.

Mack hugs Daisy

Therefore, Johnson, Piper and James Davis return to the Lighthouse, where they are warmly welcomed by Mackenzie and Rodriguez, although this reunion is tainted by the absence of Fitz and Simmons. Shortly afterwards, agent Trevor Khan informs the team that May has successfully captured Sarge and is bringing him back to the Lighthouse. Meanwhile, in space, Enoch admits to Fitz that his involvement in the capture of Simmons, which greatly angers Fitz before he is incapacitated so he can soon work for the Chronicoms.
