In the mirror universe, the ISS Defiant^[1] (NX-74205^[1]) was a 24th century Terran starship, a Defiant-class warship in Terran Rebellion service in the 2370s decade. It was constructed based on stolen USS Defiant specifications. Once operational, the Defiant helped turn the tide in the war against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, especially at the Battle of Terok Nor, and represented a major boost to the rebels' morale. In the 22nd century, the Terran Empire received a boon when officers of Imperial Starfleet captured the USS Defiant in 2155, a Federation Constitution-class heavy cruiser from the year 2268 in the primary universe. (ENT episode: "In a Mirror, Darkly")

The rogue 25th century Krenim scientist Noye had arranged for the Defiant to be time-displaced as a gift to future Admiral Leeta. (STO - Future Proof mission: "Temporal Reckoning")

In the primary universe, Benjamin Sisko led the Defiant-class development project at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in the aftermath of Starfleet's disastrous defeat in the Battle of Wolf 359 against the Borg. The prototype was shelved in 2368 but brought into active service and assigned to Deep Space 9 in 2371. (DS9 episode & novelization: The Search)

By this time in the mirror universe, the Terran Empire had been conquered by the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, and Terrans served as slaves to Klingon, Cardassian and Bajoran lords. The mirror versions of Benjamin Sisko and Miles O'Brien became involved with the Terran Rebellion following an encounter with Doctor Julian Bashir and Major Kira Nerys, officers from Deep Space 9. (DS9 episode: "Crossover")

The specifications for the USS Defiant were stolen by O'Brien during a visit to the primary universe in 2371. "Smiley" O'Brien was able to download the schematics from Deep Space 9's computers and brought them back to the mirror universe, where construction began at Terok Nor, now under rebel control. While construction proceeded well with materials stolen from the Alliance, the powerful warp core on the Defiant caused the ship to almost shake itself apart during test flights, much like had occurred with the counterpart version.

With an Alliance fleet on its way to retake the station in 2372, O'Brien enlisted the help of Professor Jennifer Sisko to bring Captain Benjamin Sisko into the mirror universe, so that he could solve the problems on the Defiant. Sisko was able to iron out the problems and even commanded the Defiant in the fight against Regent Worf's fleet. At the time, the ISS Defiant resembled its prime counterpart except for missing the USS and NX markings on its hull. The ship's dedication plaque identified it as the ISS Defiant NX-74205, a registry number shared with its Federation counterpart. (DS9 episode: "Shattered Mirror")

In mid-2375, the Defiant was used to pursue Ezri Tigan and Brunt and to repel a further attack by the Alliance. (DS9 episode: "The Emperor's New Cloak")

The Defiant was too small to carry other vessels except for shuttlepods. (Decipher CCG: CCG set: Mirror, Mirror)

A few months later, Rebellion Generals Zek and Julian Bashir gained the resources to build twenty-four more Defiant-class warships at their new shipyard at Empok Nor. Twelve of these were made, including the Capital Gain, Jadzia and Terra Victor. However, eleven were destroyed in the explosion that destroyed Empok Nor, and the Capital Gain was disabled and captured by the IKS Ya'Vang, along with Zek and Bashir.

The remaining twelve warships were promised some time later by O'Brien as part of his plan for a Alpha Quadrant-wide "revolution" against the Alliance. That made a total of thirteen Defiant class warships including the Defiant herself. (DS9 - Obsidian Alliances novella: Saturn's Children)

In early 2377, Captain Leeta was in command of the Defiant. (DS9 novel: The Soul Key)

Memory Omega began supporting the Terran Rebellion, and other insurrections against the Klingon-Cardassian Alliance, more openly. Jean-Luc Picard became the figurehead of the international rebellion when the most powerful generals, Smiley and Mac Calhoun, failed to reach a compromise. Memory Omega trained the rebels in use of their jaunt ships, vessels equipped with a wormhole generator that allowed instantaneous movement across the Milky Way Galaxy and beyond. The ISS Defiant was refitted with a wormhole generator as well.

Following the destruction of Terok Nor, Defiant operated from Memory Omega's extragalactic Erebus Station.

In January 2379, Ezri Dax assumed command of the Defiant following the death of her wife Leeta and the retirement of General O'Brien. The Defiant became a free starship under the Galactic Commonwealth. (Mirror Universe novel: Rise Like Lions)

Alternate timelines[]

In an alternate timeline beset by the Q Continuum's temporal anomaly crisis, versions of the ISS Defiant emerged in the year 2380. They were acquired by Federation Starfleet to perform missions and assist Q in resolving the crisis. (ST video game: Timelines)

In another permutation of the mirror universe, James O'Brien killed Miles O'Brien and wrested control of the Terran Rebellion from him. Captain James O'Brien then used his father's resources to form the Second Terran Empire. (STO - Cardassian Struggle mission: "The Other Side")

In 2409, Captain O'Brien led the Imperial Starfleet invading the primary universe. The Defiant-class tactical escort ISS Defiant (NCC-75633-C) took part in the invasion. The ISS Defiant-C was one of the ships harassing Federation and civilian shipping lanes in the sectors of the Beta Ursae sector block.
