The USS Sao Paulo (initially NCC-75633-A, later NX-74205-A)[1] was a 24th century Federation starship, a Defiant-class destroyer in Starfleet service from the 2370s decade.[2] In the 2400s, the ship underwent a refit that made it the Sao Paulo-class tactical escort prototype.[1] (ST video games: Armada, Star Trek Online)
Service history and disposition[]
The USS Sao Paulo (NCC-75633) was launched from the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on stardate 52889.3 in the year 2375. The ship was named for the city São Paulo in Brazil on Earth's South American continent. When Vice Admiral William Ross delivered the Sao Paulo to Deep Space 9, the ship set a new speed record for its class. Ross handed command over to Captain Benjamin Sisko, with a special dispensation to rename the vessel. Sisko re-designated his ship after the recently destroyed USS Defiant (NX-74205). (DS9 episode: "The Dogs of War")
A Defiant-class destroyer Sao Paulo[2]-A[1] had entered service in the year 2376. The ship was involved in repelling the Borg Invasion of 2376. (ST video game: Armada)
When Locutus led a Borg fleet into the Sol star system, Starfleet deployed all available destroyers against the Borg Collective to defend Earth. (ST video game: Armada mission: "A Line in the Sand")
Six months later, 2377, Starfleet suffered an attack by Gul Kentar's insurrectionist forces in the Pearl Nebula, and defended the galaxy during the Borg Invasion of 2377 and a Species 8472 incursion. The Sao Paulo-A was one of the ships involved in combat. (ST video game: Armada II)
In 2379, the Sao Paulo was available for a training simulation at Starfleet Academy by Carey. (ST video game: Armada, tutorial missions)
The Sao Paulo-A remained in service into the 25th century. In the 2400s decade, Starfleet was involved in the Federation-Klingon War of 2405-2410. In the year 2409, the Sao Paulo underwent an extensive refit that replaced or updated all of its major components, including the addition of phaser quad cannons tied directly into the ship's engines for power. Its components remained interchangeable with Defiant-class escorts, and the ship was now rated as a tier 4 tactical escort. At the time, it carried the registry number NCC-75633-A. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
From the year 2410 onward, the Sao Paulo represented its class in the Starfleet Shipyards Operations interface. It had been re-registered NX-74205-A. By then, a USS Defiant (NCC-75633-C had entered service. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock")
Khitomer Alliance flag officer in, or aligned with, Starfleet, deployed Sao Paulo for missions around the galaxy's four quadrants as part of the four-quadrant strategy. (STO - Klingon War mission: "Welcome to Earth Spacedock", admiralty system)
Following the Battle of Excalbia on stardate 84999.22[3] in early 2411, which saw the prominent involvement of hero ships from the Federation's past and present, the Sao Paulo-A was among the tactical escorts that received a refit to legendary pilot warship qualifications. For the refit, the ship carried the registry number NCC-75633-A again but retained NX-74205-A in the Starfleet Shipyards Operations interface. Background[]
No specific history or definitive final fate was established for this vessel in the Armada series as its name was selected for a destroyer by the Armada I, II game developers, and is placed randomly each time the ship appears.
In Star Trek Online, it is revealed that the second Defiant-class USS Sao Paulo was the first ship of a refit subclass named for itself, some 35 years after the first USS Sao Paulo was renamed Defiant.[1]
