The Icarus-class was a type of Federation starship that were originally in Starfleet service in the early-to-mid 23rd century. The class continued its service into the 24th century, where it would serve predominantly as a research vessel. This ship class was named after a character from Human mythology, Icarus.
- Presumably, there would be a "USS Icarus" as the prototype of this class, but to date such a vessel has not been referenced in any source
History and specifications[]
By the mid-2260s decade, the Icarus-class vessels had largely been phased out of service and replaced by newer starship classes, however, Starfleet began recommissioning Icarus-class vessels in the year 2267 as Starfleet Command prepared for war with the Klingon Empire. (TOS - Errand of Fury novel: Demands of Honor)
During the Battle of Donatu V in 2244, two Icarus-class vessels, the USS Endeavour and USS Yorkshire, were involved in the battle against Klingon forces. (TOS - Errand of Vengeance novel: Killing Blow, TOS - Errand of Fury novel: Seeds of Rage)
Following the recommissioning of the Icarus-class in preparation for the Federation-Klingon War of 2267, it was decided to keep the class in active service, albeit with periodic refits and upgrades. By the mid-24th century, the model four Icarus-class had entered active service with one vessel, the USS Gregor Mendel, being assigned as a research vessel operating out of Starbase 84. (TNG novel: A Call to Darkness)
