The type-3 personnel shuttlecraft was a type of small spacecraft, a shuttlecraft in use by the Federation's Starfleet in the 24th century.

History and specifications[]

In the 2330s decade, the starship USS Stargazer was equipped with a type-3, as well two type-4 shuttlecraft and two type-5 shuttlecraft. Upon Ensign Jiterica's assignment to Stargazer in the year 2333, Lieutenant Chiang familiarized her with the roster of the vessel's complement of shuttles. Chiang's commentary indicated that the type-3 was not a new vehicle and that it couldn't handle sustained travel at warp speeds, so it was mostly held as a reserve to back up the newer, better equipped vehicles. (STA novel: Gauntlet)

While the novel didn't reveal more details about the type-3 craft, the Star Trek Magazine plans for the Stargazer showed several SW7 class shuttles aboard the ship. Its possible that the type-3 is another designation for that vehicle. It is also possible that the comment about the shuttle's age was meant to give the impression that this looked similar to the TOS-era S3 class shuttle, where "S3" and "type-3" might be considered synonymous.

A shuttle of this type, the Manhattan was attached to the USS Hood in the 2370s. The Manhattan was used by Lieutenant Tuvok to affect his "defection" to the Maquis in 2371. The shuttle was destroyed by the Maquis vessel Liberator in order to avoid being tracked by the Hood. (VOY - The Brave and the Bold, Book Two novella: The Third Artifact)
