The SW7-class was a type of shuttlecraft that was operated by the United Federation of Planets in the late-23rd century. The class was designed and built by the Chiokis Starship Construction Corporation.
History and specifications[]
The rear section could be swapped out for different mission profiles. The vessel had access hatches to port and starboard, as well as an aft docking port. For one mission, the crew cabin was repurposed as a medical bay with a biobed. (TOS eBook: The More Things Change)
By 2273, they were commonly seen on many Starfleet vessels such as the Enterprise-class. An SW7 was a small craft that was able to hold seven passengers. Its features included a standard Starfleet docking collar along with a side door, magnetic field drive, thrusters and an airlock. They were also capable of warp speed when attached to a warp sled, and atmospheric re-entry and take off from a planet either with or without the warp sled. The SW7 contained enough consumables for twenty days length at maximum warp and allowing any travel within that timeframe. However, careful rationing was also able to extend the time available though generally any interstellar travel needed to occur between two relatively close points. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek III Sourcebook Update; ST reference: Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise)
In 2273, Spock traveled from Vulcan to the Sol system aboard the SW7 Surak using a warp sled. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Motion Picture)
In 2273, the SW7 Halley was disabled in the Hohweyn system and required rescuing. (TOS novel: The Kobayashi Maru)
In 2274, the Federation starship USS Enterprise sent a landing party to Kzinti-occupied Mimit aboard an SW7. A Kzinti fighter particle beam struck the shuttle, dislodging its warp sled. Despite its deflector shields, the shuttle spiraled out of control and crashed on Mimit. A ravager ripped into the wrecked fuselage, but was stunned unconscious by a phaser rifle shot, and the crew were able to climb out of the wreckage. (TOS comic: "The Wristwatch Plantation")
In 2275, Jahn forced an adult at gunpoint to take him aboard an SW7 shuttle from Miri's homeworld to Starbase 11. He kidnapped Joanna McCoy and took the shuttle back to his homeworld using the ship's autopilot. (TOS - Untold Voyages comic: "Past Imperfect")
In 2287, Hikaru Sulu took a security team down to Datugad aboard the SW7 Galileo. (TOS comic: "So Near the Touch")

Background[]
- The FASA RPG module: Star Trek III Sourcebook Update and TOS reference: The Motion Picture Blueprints maintain that with the warp sled, the SW7-class was the first standard Starfleet shuttle to have warp drive. However, this is contradicted in canon by the regular warp flights conducted by the Class F shuttlecraft.
- The FASA Sourcebook also states that the shuttle was unarmed and did not possess deflector shields, but Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise states that it did, and they were noted in TOS comic: "The Wristwatch Plantation". However, Mr. Scott's Guide does not give a class-name for the shuttle, so they could be two different types, despite appearing identical.
- The unlicensed USS Enterprise Officer's Manual notes an atmospheric entry heat shield was located at the front of the long range shuttle, as well as placements for phaser banks and an emergency hatch at the top. It repeated the specs from The Motion Picture Blueprints.
