Ojamajo Doremi

Harukaze Doremi considers herself to be the unluckiest girl in the world. Her parents are always fighting, her little sister makes fun of her, and her crush pines after another girl. If only Doremi could just wave a magic wand, she would have a much better life—or so she used to think.

After a mishap with a real witch, Doremi becomes an apprentice witch herself, and it turns out she's pretty horrible at that, too.

Now she and her two friends must study to become better at magic so they can become good witches. That is, if they can focus on their magic studies!

The three apprentices will need all the luck they can get if they want to pass the witch exams and become full-fledged witches. Only then will Doremi's debt to the witch Majorika be repaid. Until then, Doremi will remain a useless little witch girl!

Ojamajo Doremi is a great series that has lots of elements relating to traditional depiction of witches and deals with how they're perceived by humans throughout history, as well as conveying messages about friendship and morality. The episodes may seem simple-natured, but this child-like appeal and enthusiasm will draw people in; the series wants you to partake in its imaginary and fantastical fairytale and go to a world with magic, focusing on one girl who wants to become a witch more than anything: the main character, Doremi. There are many fun and heartwarming episodes present on this journey, and while the animation is in truth ... nothing special, the series is brought together by its simplicity and wholehearted values about friendship. Over the course of a year, the girls go from strangers or being on uneasy terms to friends despite their potential differences, and we get to see their personal lives and how they use their magic to help others. It's a very heartwarming message in a medium which is surrounded by subversion and dark themes, and successfully creates connections with viewers. In truth here, we find that witches aren't (as western media sometimes presents) to be feared; rather, misunderstood would be more accurate, as most witches seem to be benevolent. The girls' exams to progress in witch levels are entertaining and educational: each provides a simplistic yet valuable lesson that anyone can take to heart, regardless of age. All of the characters are charming in their own way, including the sometimes impatient Majou Rika, or "precocious" Pop, as well as the series "villain" (who I shall not spoil here.) The art style is truly charming and brings together everything into a cutely wrapped package, taking advantage of the medium to its fullest. All of the "characters-of-the-day", so to speak, are memorable and provide wonderful backstories in their own rights, allowing viewers easy investment into their problems and worries. While the girls' magic may not always be reliable, their friendship is, which is the true strength of the series; bonds formed with people can be stronger than anything, and the series thrives on this. This series is easily worth recommending to anyone interested in the magical girl genre. 9/10.

I'll start the review with a question: did you check the credits before watching or being interested in this series? if you didn't, the directors will remind you constantly of their previous work in a little known series that goes by the name of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon with character types, scenes and themes already present in another form in that absolute masterpiece of superheroics and japanese animation (like they will be in parts in the extremely underrated shoujo classic Ashita No Nadja, I might add). In fact, this could be easily seen as a version of that classic geared towards a younger demographics, with ... a bigger focus on daily life problems that the target audience - and their parents - can easily identify with and less on saving the world from eeeevel threats. But, there are two twists: the protagonists this time are proper witches and not superheroines and luckily the creators provide enough in worldbulding that this doesn't feel like a cheap, 100% imitation of a superior product like it was the case with the awful crap named Wedding Peach. My only slight gripe with this series is the way they presented a sensitive thematic like the divorce (I'm not 1000% convinced of it), but maybe in the following seasons they will improve that aspect. All in all, especially if you're a Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon fan, i'd say go for it with no problemo, you won't be disappointed.

I used to wake up at 7 am every Saturday to watch the dubbed version of this show air on TV when I was a kid. It was only recently that I recalled this show and realized that I never finished watching it as a kid, and thus, I decided to binge it this holiday.

"Ojamajo Doremi" has a unique story that somehow manages to relate magic to all sorts of real-life scenarios. It's a beautiful twist between the genres of school life and fantasy. As for art and sound, they are pretty good for the times in which the show was produced. They could've been ... better, but the budgets were probably lower because this is a kid's show, and kids don't care about how pristine the graphics can be.

Sure, I binged and loved "Ojamajo Doremi" as an adult for the nostalgia, but I believe it is a great show regardless. It reiterates important lessons about friendship in different, cute ways in each episode.
