Metallic Rouge

After emerging victorious against an alien species known as Usurpers using combat androids called Neans, mankind colonized Mars and enjoyed post-war peace. Having fulfilled their purpose as soldiers, Neans became subservient workers and second-class citizens to humans. Requiring a daily dose of Nectar to sustain themselves, the androids depend on their masters for its supply of the drug.

However, among this societal hierarchy lie Proto-Neans, independent specialized androids that can summon metallic exoskeletons with superhuman capabilities. Rouge Redstar is one such Proto-Nean working undercover for Aletheia, the government organization overseeing the regulation of Neans, alongside her human partner, Naomi Orthmann.

Rouge and Naomi's mission is to eliminate the Immortal Nine—Proto-Neans who threaten humanity for cryptic reasons. At the same time, an investigator is making his way to Mars to follow a series of murders where Rouge is considered the prime suspect. As the pair delve deeper into their search for the Immortal Nine, they uncover groundbreaking information about the rogue androids and the organization they work for.

Not sure why so much negative reviews, but the show isn't bad, sure, it is no masterpiece, and that might be the point, people that comes to the show expecting a refined plot may be disappointed.

It is a simple premise, a young girl arriving on mars on a secret mission, from there, the viewer will learn more about the world the girl live, her mission and her. While it starts off pretty mysterious, about half way the anime most of the missing plot can be de deducted, which is not enterily bad, nor it is good :) . It aimed at an adult audience, but ... delivered a more easily digested and not so harsh storyline, even though the world that houses our cast seems to be very hostile.

Visually it is quite good, most of the time the frames are consistent and the battles are nice, I like the whole armor theme too, for some reason I kept thinking about Lies of P throught the show :P

OST is good, nothing noteworthy here, except that piano track that plays all the time lol, some might find it annoying

The show could have been better? Definitely, but that is true for almost all TV shows.

But, is it worth watching? It is. It isn't a long show, it is very easy to follow the story and even though is not that deep of a plot, it does bring some good reflections now and then.

Mixed Feelings

the Good:
- Brilliant Art Design
- Memorable OST that fits the overall presentation. Great opening/ending.
- Enjoyable and interesting main characters
- Interesting lore and premise of the story
- Quality of animation, frame compositions and action sequences look great

The Bad:
- Although interesting premise, it's a remix of all Cyberpunk/Sci-Fi tropes that we have seen before
- Too many supporting characters who drag throughout the episodes, making the plot difficult to catch up
...
The Ugly:
- The storytelling is a total mess. It is caused by enormous shortcuts to compress the story in 13 episodes. This result in large amount of important information delivered to the viewer in form of exposition heavy dialogues between characters.
- And then followed by many logically flawed events.
- Plot twists are extensively used to push the story conveniently further, therefore they lack any emotional baggage and become exhausting over time.
- Presentation of supporting characters is chaotic. They jump in and out between episodes. Their actions doesn’t seem to have sense until explained later.
- Atmosphere is spoiled due to fast pace and frequent jumps between locations.

Conclusion:
It is heavily frustrating to see Metallic Rouge doing so many things right and yet falling apart on the most important aspect: delivering a good story. If you ignore plot shortcuts, chaotic pacing, missing blanks and pay attention to the story, you will enjoy a fantastic world with coherent presentation that stands out in nowadays underrepresented Cyberpunk/Sci-Fi genre. For anyone who is not a fan of this genre, watching it will feel like a chore.

This was such a mess. The producers got nothing right. Which really sucked, considering they at least had a smidgeon of a good idea. But the execution was hardly stellar, to be kind. I dropped this 3 times before I finally pushed through to the end. In the long run, it certainly wasn't worth the effort.

The artwork was OK. Professionally rendered if not inspired. The animation quality, even the CGI, started off good but nosedived seriously as the series progressed. Some of the action sequences in the middle episodes were on the edge of laughable. It tried to make a comeback in the last ... couple eps, but it was too little too late. This was just trash, and not even flashy trash.

Rouge as a character is poorly designed. The Power Ranger persona was so cliche. Her human configuration was better, but even after mounds of backstory (about half of it could have been cut), she's still 2 dimensional and boring. There's no getting connected with her. Naomi was a much better character, but the way the writers whipsaw her was not believable, and felt highly contrived. Any of the other characters were just background noise.

While the story itself could have been worthy, the writers screwed things up so badly with plot holes, and scenes that made me stop, and say "Huh?" Especially early on, before there was any back story or world building provided. Even then, the back story wasn't that gripping. and the world building was just meh. The ending occured to me that someone forgot to tell the writers "Wrap it up, You got 2 episodes." This comes off like it was written by a corporate committee, with the cheapest contractors they could find, on Zoom. The writers should be banned from further jobs in the anime industry.

It didn't help that the VA who did Rouge was flatter than the tire you got on your car last vacation; blander than outmeal. The actress that did Naomi was much better, but not enough to pull the fat out of the fire. Between the voice acting and the animation flubs, the direction can hardly be praised.

If I was going give this an Olympic medal rating, it would earn a lead. If I was grading, it's 40/100, an E dangling on the edge of an F. The score would be lower, if not for the one decent character. In the long run this series left me seeing red, and it's not in the least recommendable.
