Noein: Mou Hitori no Kimi e

Noein is like a jazzed-up version of Fantastic Children. A group of mysterious people have something to do with other dimensions, and they get involved with some kids, including an important girl they are looking for. Some of them give up on the mission along the way; there's sci-fi, and mystery (and other related things that might be spoilers). They're both somewhat mature series, with lots to think about, and some quiet yet vivid drama, and they don't have a lot of action or romance. Have a somewhat unusual art style. Incidentally, they are both original series (not based off anything) which may be why they both have a strong cohesiveness throughout the whole.

Historical stories with a realistic feel about court life, and the drama and politics there. And the romance and "bedroom life" of the shogun. There is a crossover of some characters (Iemitsu, particularly). Ooku is longer, and a josei. Samon is a seinen, with a lot of martial arts.

Shinrei Tantei Yakumo

-About detectives and police who solves murder mysteries, and must deal with the living, as well as the memories of the dead. -Each has two main characters: one has a secretive and acidic personality, and the other wants to figure out what burdens he carries to make him that way. -Has something to spice up a plain mystery storyline (Shinrei has supernatural elements, and Himitsu has sci-fi) -Both have a lot of horror and creepiness. Himitsu is a LOT more gory (but I think it's the more interesting of the two).

Terra e... (TV)

Shoujo (or at least shoujo-esque) fantasy sci-fi's with a heavy focus on drama. In Escaflowne, it's mostly romance; in Terra, it's mostly tragedy. Some occasional battles and fights. The main character makes important decisions for the people they are with, but unfortunately they don't always make the right choice, leading to disaster. The main female character is a psychic. The antagonist has a lot of interesting angles to him. Have rich orchestral and choral soundtracks. Character designs are somewhat old-school. The endings could be seen as sad, disappointing, or bittersweet.

Sci-fi's where a boy lives in an advanced and tightly controlled society, but then gets in trouble with them, and must flee. Even though his life is at risk, he wishes to return. Shion and Jomy are both very impulsive (though Jomy is probably a little more intelligent). The boy has a mentor figure who introduces him to his new life in the outside world (Nezumi is like a cross between Blue and Keith). There's a little flavor of 'bromance' too.

Kiba no Tabishounin: The Arms Peddler

Kiba feels like a more adult version of Tegami. They start off with a young boy who loses his family, and is taken around by a rather stoic adult. Weapons can be used to kill, letters can be used to tell lies or hurtful truths. The boy's eyes are opened to the truth of the world he lives in. Have a similar steampunk/Western style.

The only ones they can trust are themselves. That trust is the only real warmth in the series. Have lots of violence and rape. Art style is similar.
