While their settings and surrounding premises are drastically different (Violet Evergarden being a steampunk slice of life while Shigofumi is a supernatural urban thriller), both are emotional narratives revolving around their lead characters as female kuudere protagonists, whom are emotionally withdrawn and their job is to deliver letters on behalf of their clients. Both shows have both standalone and story-driven segments.

Both are sad melodramas about an emotionally stunted girl delivering letters on behalf of her customers. Both are semi-episodic, i.e. having both stand alone and story driven parts for the backstory of the heroine. Both protagonists have a history of childhood abuse. Sadness is the primary emotion in both. While Violet Evergarden is slice of life and action in early 20th century steampunk Europe, Shigofumi at heart is a contemporary supernatural mystery thriller.

An epistolary adventure. Shigofumi and Violet Evergarden follow the same idea of delivering messages, with the same kind of emotionless lead doing the job in a dedicated fashion. Shigofumi follows Fumika and her missions to deliver Shigofumi, messages from the dead, for her dead clients. Violet Evergarden is the same however, Violet delivering messages are not from dead people, rather, people are alive. Both are good drama-fantasy anime in which follow their respective MC delivering messages on a grand quest to achieve their true object.
