They focus primarily on the characters themselves as individuals, rather than focusing strictly on their comedic mannerisms. While both have comedic moments, both actually excel at using atmosphere to accent its character-driven drama. Both are slice of life/ drama which really pick up pace towards the end
They show a group of girls in a working environment of a smaller company that is trying to be more popular. Episodes are structured the same way where it's mostly episodic with a few arcs.
Some episodes are designed to make you laugh, some are more touching and will make you sad and some are just adorable! Fans of Hanasaku Iroha who don't mind idol shows should definitely check out The IdolM@ster and fans of IdolM@ster that want to watch a show similar to it not necessarily about idols should check out Hanasaku Iroha
