Abstract
In the early colonial days when Governor Spottswood, with his Knights of the Golden Horseshoe, ventured to cross the mountains, then a barrier between Virginia and the territory west, he realized the necessity of a water way to connect the two portions of the state so that the products of the western part could be brought to the Atlantic coast, both for the use of that portion of Virginia then being settled by the white man and for shipment to foreign countries. Yet he was so occupied with other interests that he could do nothing for the achievement of such a great and desirable work.
