Wolfe Tone (born June 20, 1763, Dublin, Ire.—died Nov. 19, 1798, Dublin) was a founder of the United Irishmen and a leading figure in the fight for Irish independence from British rule In 1798 and one of the key figures in the United Ireland rebellion of 1798.Tone helped form the Society of United Irishmen. In October 1798 attempt to land in Ireland with French troops and supplies, he was taken prisoner. Sentenced to be hanged, he died from a reportedly self-inflicted wound.
