Through shelter, we empower.
About us
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The Christian housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in local communities across all 50 states in the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.

Only 21% of countries demonstrate high-level commitments to housing in their national climate goals, according to a white paper released today by Habitat for Humanity at the COP29 Azerbaijan climate change conference. Perhaps even more worryingly, 61% of countries show no or minimal commitment to housing within these plans, according to the paper titled “Housing and Informal Settlements Content in Nationally Determined Contributions.” Read more in the full press release: https://lnkd.in/e33qPhGT

Last week, many state and local ballot measures aimed at expanding or protecting home affordability were put before the public for a vote. Here are a just a few examples of affordable housing wins supported by Habitat organizations across the U.S. ✅ In North Carolina, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity advocated for four ballot initiatives totaling $80 million, aimed at creating a more equitable and resilient community. These measures encompass affordable housing, transportation, public safety, and parks and recreation — all crucial for improving quality of life for residents. ✅ In Rhode Island, South County Habitat for Humanity successfully advocated with state legislators and the governor to put the Housing Acquisition, Development, and Infrastructure Bond referendum on the statewide ballot. With its passing, it will dedicate $120 million to increasing and preserving the availability of low- and moderate-income housing. ✅ In Missouri, HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ST. LOUIS was supportive of Proposition 5, which imposes a 3% nightly fee on short term rentals to generate funding for the affordable housing trust fund. Revenues from this fee will also be utilized towards the city’s affordable housing initiatives, relocation assistance, counsel for eviction defense and homelessness prevention. #HabitatVoicesInAction
