This article needs shortening

This article is far, far too long. WP:Size recommends "A page of about 30 kB to 50 kB of readable prose" but this article is already more than 200kB. There's some obvious ways in which it could be shortened:

- Separate out the background section leaving a summary on this page.

- Remove alternate theories about the shootings to a separate page, leaving a summary of them on this page. This is what was done with conspiracy theories on the 9/11 page.

- Separate out detailed discussion of the situation in the Crimea - only a summary is needed here. Ditto the situation in the Donbass. FOARP (talk) 10:41, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
