He was born on 18th OCTOBER 1897 at Marhaura, Saran Dist. His elementary education was done at Marhuara and he Passed Entrance Exam in 1915 from Chappra, Zila School. He completed his Graduation from Patna College, in 1919 with distinction in Economics .He topped in M.A. Economics, breaking the record of Patna universities in 1923
He received scholarship in 1924 for higher studies at Cambridge university, where, too he established, a record securing double 1st class in “ Tricus ( a Cambridge honours examination). After doing tricus, he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Economics in year 1927 in Ravenshaw College, cuttock.
In 1931, he became professor of Economics at Patna college and later became Head of the Department. He Joined Inspector of schools in 1934 and continued till 1938 in which year he was appointed as Deputy Director of Education but his abounding love for teaching brought him back to Patna college again in 1941 as head of department of Economics. Five year later he became the first Bihari Principal of Patna College. He was appointed to the post of Director of Public Instruction in 1948. He retired as DPI in 1952.
Gorakh Babu was appointed as Secretary of Bihar Agricultural Farm Enquiry committee. In 1956 He was appointed as Director of Reserve Bank, Central Board. He went to madras in 1958 as member of Railway Rate Tribunal Board. In 1960 Gorakh Babu became Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India. He became First Director of Anugrah Narayan Institute for social Studies in 1961 and continued till 1965.He was associated with number of committees and institutions. Gorakh babu was member of pay Revision committee Bihar State small scale Industries Board etc.
Gorakh Babu conducted the well known Food Survey of Bihar in 1946-47, which was first ever attempt in India in this direction, aimed at finding out the basic position regarding food economics of this state. .
In 1966, he was the Chairman of Bihar State Financial Corporation and member of the Two-man Inquiry Commission to Probe into the administration of the universities in Bihar.
Mr. Gorakhnath Singh died in 10 March 1966 at Boring Road, Patna.
