Forgetting password to old account

[edit]

If you can't remember the other account's password and didn't enter an email address, then you'll simply have to stick with this new account. I know of no other recourse, and the relevant help page agrees. As it states, you can link the two pages to clear up the confusion for anyone. All the work you put into your user and talk pages can be copy-and-pasted into the new pages, and the old user and user talk pages redirected to these new ones. Otherwise, you really haven't lost too much. - Draeco (talk) 16:46, 21 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I took so long to respond; I've been on hiatus. You change an existing page to a redirect by removing all content on the page except the following bold text: #REDIRECT [[Insert name of destination page here]] On an unrelated note, you may also want to modify your signature since your "talk page" link doesn't really link to your talk page. You need to put a space between "User" and "talk" in "User talk:Hereforhomework2". - Draeco (talk) 18:20, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New adopter/Mentor

[edit]

Saw your post at the help desk and thought I'd drop by and tell you that I would be glad to adopt you, if you like. Only one of my adoptees is currently very active, so I think I could handle another one. As for my activity, I'm on practically every day (and when I'm not, my talk pages stalkers are!). If you want someone else, no problem! PrincessofLlyr royal court 21:16, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually you were one of the people I considered asking...I will have to let my former adopter know. Homework2 pass a notesign! 13:08, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
We totally just overlapped each other over on Thalia Grace - you did exactly what I was working on! Anyway, let me know when you've contacted your adopter and I can place the appropriate boxes on our userpages. Do you have any questions right now? I don't really have a classroom, although I suppose I could give you challenges if you wanted. Whatever you want! PrincessofLlyr royal court 13:20, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hope that isn't bad...I let him know but he probably won't get my message for awhile. For the moment, I have no questions, but naturally with me that changes fast. Actually, a challenge would be great. I do not really do much except piddle around romoving vandalism. Homework2 pass a notesign! 13:27, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think it will be okay. I changed the template on your page and will add one to mine when I'm done here. For the most part, your editing seems to be good. I'm very impressed with the way you've jumped into helping several projects. As for having something to do here, I know you currently don't use any of the automated tools, but have you considered Huggle, Igloo. etc? You can revert vandalism a lot faster that way. I've never gotten bored Huggling, except when I get sick of reverting vandals! New page patrol is another boredom fighting technique, although I suggest thoroughly learning the criteria for speedy deletion before working there. Also, there are challenges at the reward board. Ottawa4ever's "old school vandalism hunting challenge" is a good one. I have more ideas if you don't like any of these. PrincessofLlyr royal court 14:00, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds great. Thanks a lot. Homework2 pass a notesign! 14:03, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting post to the sandbox...I don't mind as long as that's the only place you do it. You can also vandalize my sandbox if it becomes too much. However, do not change any of the content and please don't use any profanity! PrincessofLlyr royal court 21:03, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Heh heh...so you saw that. I just kinda went crazy. However some part of me led me to the Sandbox and not some randon article. I was considering making my own personal "go crazy and vandalize" page. Homework2 pass a notesign! 00:58, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think we've all had urges to vandalize occasionally. I know I have (wanted to) and at least one of my tps's. However, I don't want to endanger my reputation here (or get a warning), so I haven't. On a RL note, several things on your userpage struck a chord with me. I love playing soccer, and have actually been doing it for eight years. I have three siblings. I'm also from the South and a little older than you. Obviously, we have similar tastes in reading, which is probably my favorite thing in the world. Anyway, that's a little glimpse of me! I thought it might help - sometimes I have trouble picturing the person with whom I'm working. On a WP note, I have a wedding this weekend (not mine) and things are a little crazy. So far I've been able to make it on, but I have no guarantees about tomorrow, and know I won't be on hardly at all Saturday. However, my talk page stalkers are always ready to help and have instructions to do so, which means you can still post any questions this weekend on my talk page. PrincessofLlyr royal court 03:20, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That is really cool. I was wondering what you were like other than your tastes in reading. Anyway, if you haven't noticed, I don't really log online during the weekends because of sports, family stuff, etc. So your absence won't affect me at all. Have fun at that wedding! Speedy deletion converted to PROD: Josh Garland

[edit]

Hello Hereforhomework2. I am just letting you know that I have converted the speedy deletion tag that you placed on Josh Garland to a proposed deletion tag, because I do not believe CSD applies to the page in question. Thank you. Closedmouth (talk) 13:59, 11 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Twinkle

[edit]

You know, Twinkle makes reverting vandalism so much easier. Two clicks and warnings and tags automatically placed, rollback, automatic AIV reports, the whole lot. You should give it a go. I hate to see people slaving away at the vandals without it. (That of Huggle.) ALI nom nom 15:16, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So I have been told. However, my parents allow very limited computer freedom, so I am not able to download it. I am fine without it anyway I suppose. If I mess up, please tell me. I am not really good with the whole speedy deletion thing. Homework2 pass a notesign! 15:25, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a download. If you go into Preferences -> Gadgets, then you check the little box next to "Twinkle," then it activates. All it does is add some extra buttons to the bar at the top of articles. It works for your account no matter from where you log in- that's why I use it. I strongly recommend it. And don't worry about messing up, you're doing fine from what I can see. Everyone makes the occasional mistake. (Also, Twinkle has little descriptions of what each CSD criteria applies to... hint hint...) ALI nom nom 17:06, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
However I use Internet Explorer. And very unfortunately it doesn't work with my browser. Thanks for your help though! Homework2 pass a notesign! 17:08, 13 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Optical Fiber: 19 May 2010

[edit]

Dear Mr. Homework,

On Optical Fiber, I came across the vandalism and was attempting to undo it. The "undo" action did not work however, as the vandal had closed off that option by spreading his vandalism across several edits.

Do not go around making unfounded accusations. But, according to your page, you're only a teenager, so your ignorance can be forgiven. To an extent.

77.99.172.78 (talk) 17:05, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Mr. Homework,

I know I reverted to an unclean version of the page; it is precisely this that I have explained in my first comment above. More about your username. you're not in any trouble or anything, I'm just curious. Tommy2010 17:49, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Phew". Scared me there for a second. I originally got an account because I had looked up Stichelhaar (dog) for school and it wasn't there. I decided that I would create the article and found a book about it from the library. Took Hereforhomework as my username cause that's basically the reason I joined. Got addicted to Wiki after that. Homework2 TalkWhat I do 18:33, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You have been blocked!! Just kidding. Yeah that's what I thought. :) I create mine cuz I live in an apt complex and was sick of getting false "vandalism warnings" on articles I never even edited. So I created an account and got addicted myself. Tommy2010 23:27, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

And I'm proud to say I WP:NPP patrolled that very article! I'm really glad to see a new user contributing so constructively - more often than not, new pages are either a mess or vandalism. Thanks, and keep it up! (Balance it with school, of course) Airplaneman 23:43, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Warning vandals

[edit]

Issuing the same level warning three time is generally pointless. You might like to use Twinkle, which has a complete index of warnings, but you should increment them for repeat vandalism. Thanks, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:36, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Since we have already established that Twinkle doesn't work on your browser and you don't want to change browsers, I suggest you read WP:Vandalism#Warnings which lists the vandal warnings in increasing severity. After the final warning and another disruptive edit a vandal can (and should) be reported to WP:AIV where they will most likely be blocked. Does all that make sense? PrincessofLlyr royal court 17:51, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah. I have done that before.Homework2 TalkWhat I do 02:14, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pestering adopter...

[edit]

Sorry, I'm sure it seems like I'm pestering you, but I hope it's actually going to help you around WP. This time it's about your vandalism page. While not always a bad thing, there is a great deal of controversy about them. The main argument against one is that it encourages vandalism that is kept. It is up to you, but I suggest that it might be a good idea to request deletion. This can be done by posting {{db-u1}} on the page. Like I said, you don't have to, but I would encourage it. See this for an example of the chaos caused by this. PrincessofLlyr royal court 22:20, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. I will. didnt know that. Homework2 TalkWhat I do 02:14, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Got it deleted. Homework2 TalkWhat I do 02:44, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Great! So, pages to edit that are a challenge...have you ever read the Pendragon series? That's rambling mess. One of my projects for the summer.

I'm working on clearing out the WikiProject Novels unknown-importance back log here. Right now it's at about 1,400. You just look at the article, decide generally how important it is and add that rating on the talk page. It will probably look like this: {{NovelsWikiProject|class=(may or may not be something here)|importance=}}. It could also appear as just {{NovelsWikiProject}}, in which case you would change it to: {{NovelsWikiProject|importance=whatever your rating}}. Remember to use "show preview" to see if it showed up correctly. See here for more guidelines on importance.

I'm also in the process of reviving Wikipedia:WikiProject Homeschooling if you're interested in helping with that. Have you browsed around the WP community much? I learned a lot from reading RfA's and looking around the userspace of major editors. You might see policies you weren't familiar with or get a better idea of the serious work of WP. Another good place is WP:AFD, especially for learning policies. I'll link some more articles when I think of them. The best way is just to think of subjects you're interested in (a book, movie, song, etc.), look at the article and see if there's anything you can clean up. If you look at Wikipedia:Community Portal there's a whole long list of articles that need to be worked on. PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:25, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have never read the Pendragon series, though that page is definately messed up. I will help with the WikiProject Novels back log. That looks like it would be interesting. Thanks for the ideas. You make a great adopter! Homework2 TalkWhat I do 15:05, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aw, thanks! I like helping new users learn things faster than I did and not make mistakes that they might not even know are wrong. Also, I had a really good !adopter: User:Airplaneman. He never adopted me, but answered all my questions. It made things a lot easier for me. Much like you, I had no idea where to work or what to do. I spent a lot of time browsing policy and the community, which gave me a good foundation for when I did start working on lots of articles.
Here's a list where you can see some of my assessments if you want examples. I'm also working on John D. Lambris, but it's a complete stub and need lots of content added, which is definitely harder than cleanup work. There's also Union of Upper Silesians, which was written by a non-native English speaker and needs cleanup for grammar and spelling. PrincessofLlyr royal court 17:13, 2 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Assessments looking great so far. I was looking back over your userpage and thought of a question. Are you serious about running for adminship when you hit 1,000 edits? Because if you are, then your adoption program is about to get a lot harder! I can't guarantee that you'll survive an RfA, but I can tell you a whole bunch of things that would be automatic fails. Totally up to you. I'm fine with what we're doing, but it's not proper prep for RfA. PrincessofLlyr royal court 02:33, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Can't resist jumping in here. Please, I beg you not to go for RFA at 1k edits (it's nothing against you, I promise :) ). It's not worth it… trust me. Instead, try editor review or admin coaching. I'd say you have to be fairly active and productive here for about nine months to a year before considering adminship; you should be uber-familiar with the CSD policy and other janitorial miscellany (aka the boring stuff). And remember real life takes priority over Wikipedia always (I've just been lucky to have a lot of free time in the past year…) So yea.. Airplaneman 04:18, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm...good point. @Princess: I have changed my mind about that right now. I am going to wait until I have been here for 10-12 mos. @Airplaneman: Thanks for the insight. I will wait a LONG time before thinking about adminship. I was thinking about that today actually. I am close to 700 edits and was thinking that if I wanted to run for admin at 1000 edits, I didn't think I'd feel experienced enough. Thank you helpful people. Homework2 TalkWhat I do 14:32, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that's a relief. The first thing I would have told you is that you couldn't pass RfA on 1,000 edits! If you are still interested in adminship eventually, then I'll start pointing you to behind-the-scenes admin places to watch. Begin with WP:RFA. You don't have to vote, just watch. Read the nominations, questions, discussions, !votes, everything. Click on the links and read those. Just try to get a good feel for policy and community expectations. For a bit of light reading, check out WP:GRFA and WP:ARL. Continue with your regular editing for now and just keep reading. Everything you've done looks great so far! Oh, and I like your edit notice. I need to get around to creating one for myself! PrincessofLlyr royal court 01:28, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm back with more comments! Everything looks great so far, but I had a comment on your RfA !vote for TFOWR. It was okay, and actually very similar to the comment above yours, but keep in mind that RFA is neither a popularity contest nor a vote. It is a discussion/consensus. While you may understand that perfectly well, the reasoning for your vote ("I've seen him around") is actually very poor. When I began hanging around RFA I worked on those standards too, but that's honestly not good enough reason to support an RFA. And if it's not, you shouldn't use that in your vote. The most effective RfA !vote lists the reasons why the user supports the candidates and they should be good reasons. Shows understanding of policy, good temperament, experience, etc. are all good reasons. For example, I chose my reasoning as good answers to the RfA questions, good history, and no noticeable concerns. It seems stupid maybe to repeat what others have said, but it makes for a better !vote. Just something for you to think about. I stayed away from RfA for awhile just because it was such a hot-spot for controversy and criticism. Really, I think you're doing a fine job as an editor and probably getting a faster introduction to more sides of WP than most newbies. Adoption will do that! Eyecatchingness is the same reason I made mine bold and included a <br /> to put it on its own line – but only to make it more obvious (to me or anyone else) which comments were mine. A black background looks more obtrusive and out-of-place. Also, it does not make me read your comments; it only tells me "Mod MMG wuz here".
My recommendation would be for you to go the route of xeno and use bold, black text with no special background. Lastly, there's no reason your username itself cannot also serve as a link to your user page.

Regarding removal of a section from Tata Nano article.

[edit]

Hello, I made that change on the Tata Nano article (I was not logged in). The reason was be because there was already a section for Electric version of Tata Nano called "Tata Nano EV". Anmol.2k4 (talk) 20:20, 11 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE drive

[edit]

Hey Homework. Glad to see you've joined the GOCE backlog elimination drive! Just so I know (and possibly get credit), where did you find out about the drive? (If you found out via a message I delivered, I get credit.) Cheers, mono 02:28, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picked it up from PrincessofLyr's Talk page. Homework2 TalkWhat I do! 02:50, 12 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for signing up for the July Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two and a half years, all the way back to the beginning of 2008! We're really going to need all the help we can muster to get it down to a manageable number. We've ambitiously set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog this month. In order to do that, we're going to need more participants. Is there anyone that you can invite or ask to participate with you? If so, we're offering an award to the person who brings in the most referrals. Just notify ɳorɑfʈ Talk! or Diannaa TALK of who your referrals are. Once again, thanks for your support! (talk page stalker) Try reading up on WP:COPYEDIT. There isn't much there, but it'll help you get a general understanding. Basically, copyediting is the fixing of the article, usually not concerning fact-checking. To quote Wiktionary directly:

To be clear

[edit]

It was WillBildUnion that I went to the Wikiquette boards over. New user wanted to put unsourced but controversial info in articles, and after another user and I have worked with trying to get him to source stuff and not harp on and on about unrelated subjects in articles, he started accusing us of vandalism and tag-spammed the article about the other editor. You're cool, dude. Ian.thomson (talk) 15:59, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. That's...wow. He had some issues. Thanks! Homework2 TalkWhat I do! 16:01, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

My/ Your Review

[edit]

Thanks for your review its good to know that I'm doing ok, but surly I can't be that perfect, there must be something I can improve on. I do intend to start getting involved in unsourced articles and BLP's as there seems to be some that aren’t to difficult to find a reference or two for, as well as spending some more time looking through the AfD que. Thanks again.--Wintonian (talk) 18:26, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer permission

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:56, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Script you can use!

[edit]

Hi, I know you're still Wiki-bonked, but I just found this new script called Wikipedia:Dazzle! which has the same functions as TWINKLE, Friendly, FurMe and others that is also compatible for IE. This would make it a loot easier for you when warning vandals! I suggest you try it out!Derild4921 16:08, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder

[edit]

Hi! This message is just a friendly reminder that you signed up to participate in the GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive. I noticed that you haven't logged a single copy edit yet. We'd love to see you participate! The drive runs three more weeks so there's still plenty of time to earn barnstars. Thanks! --Diannaa (Talk) 22:18, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE Newsletter

[edit]
GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

[edit]
Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
