You can tell that Ms. Marvel is a relatively new character in the Marvel Universe. Marvel here is hitting both its hyper-correctness and a bit of greed. They’re clearly targeting the Pakistani and Indian markets by creating a superhero tailored to that audience. From a filmmaking perspective, there’s not much to criticize. The acting is solid too. But the "millennial troubles," as the title of the first episode puts it, felt completely off to me. At times, it felt like I was watching a modern version of S Club 7. ()
Of the Marvel paper heroines, Kamala is my favourite, so I was looking forward to the series, but a little scared at the same time. She does, in fact, have a much more important role in the Ms. Marvel books than just saving the world. This character has done so much for (not only) the Muslim community by introducing, especially in America, an ordinary teenager with unexpected superpowers dealing with family and adolescence, as well as with with prejudices against her origins. The Kamala of the book proved that you can successfully deal with everything at once, and so does the one in the series. Excellent in the first three episodes, a little less so in the second half, but still enjoyable and without any cringe. I'm almost sorry that she was given a series to start and not a movie, because, especially with the amazing Iman Vellani, she could easily be on par with Tom Holland's Spider-Man. ()
The entire fourth phase of the MCU, especially the series, is characterized by the introduction of new, though second-rate, heroes. The Ms. Marvel herself is quite a likable character, portrayed by Iman Vellani in a truly endearing way, especially in the Avengers game, she is a significant driver of the story. By nature, in her solo series, family background needs to be addressed, but simply put, Pakistani culture doesn't really resonate in Europe, and in some episodes, there was just too much of it. Worse, however, is a rather uninteresting story with many uninteresting characters (especially the cleanup crew with their leader is a bit of a slap in the face) and plotlines that lead to nowhere. Even though the first episode was praised for various visual ideas (graffiti on the walls) directed by the main duo of Mizers 3, overall, it's average for me, and I am not the target audience anyway, and if Marvel doesn't switch tracks, it will start devouring its own gilded tail. Of course, it could always be worse, but it's simply just filler. ()
