Karoline, a young factory worker, finds herself abandoned and pregnant while striving to climb out of poverty in post WW1 Copenhagen. Amidst her struggles, she meets Dagmar, a charismatic woman running a hidden adoption agency within a candy store, helping poor mothers in finding foster homes for their unwanted children. To escape poverty, Karoline takes on the role of a wet-nurse. A strong connection is formed between the two women, yet Karoline’s world shatters as she stumbles upon the dreadful revelation of the nightmarish fate she unknowingly embraces. The Girl with the Needle is a fairytale about a horrible truth. (Cannes Film Festival)

Intimate but strong Danish filmmaking, which works well with the psychology of characters and acting performances and offers a relatively sensitive topic that troubles not only the female audience. The choice of black and white visuals cleverly correlates with the chosen theme, historical context, and society in which the main "heroine" finds herself. The film covers several subtle themes that contribute to the authenticity of the World War I era and thus offers a complex, pure experience that can do without major viewer objections. KVIFF 2024 ()
A atuação aqui é primordial. ()
Ugh, that was fun! There were already rumours from Cannes about a rather dark and tormenting film, but I have to say that The Girl with the Needle went even further and in directions I didn't expect. Hats off to the utterly committed performance of Victoria Carmen Sonne, whose bold and thoroughly natural acting is truly immersive for the viewer. Magnus von Horn has a flair for atmosphere and a very believable period setting, at times I really felt completely immersed in this black and white world. A heavy, depressing affair. Not for the faint hearted. [KVIFF 2024] ()
At times already slightly theatrical (especially in the first half), nevertheless technically absolutely precise study of one pragmatically advantageous relationship, in which more and more is gradually attached to the boiler. The first half drags slightly and occasionally contains unnecessarily exaggerated moments, but the second half is excellent. The culmination of all this human filth is suggestive and almost unbelievable. Nevertheless, in the end, there is a prevailing feeling that even more could have been squeezed out of such a strong topic. Great soundtrack and very appropriately chosen black-and-white stylization. From the very first moment, the film evokes quite heavy feelings. The black-and-white treatment not only creates a very depressing atmosphere connected with the hardships of the time, but also perfectly intensifies the emotional impact on the viewer while watching the fate of the main characters. This aesthetic is not only visually appealing, but also enhances the sense of hopelessness that permeates the entire film. The Northerners are masters at evoking this type of atmosphere, and The Girl with the Needle is no exception. I wasn't really expecting anything else, but I got so much more. What makes this film unforgettable is its very dark and extremely bold ending. It's admirable how the director was able to incorporate such a theme into the story without slipping into cheap sensationalism. The film reflects the hardships of the post-war era, and is also not afraid to highlight the darkest aspects of human nature. I think The Girl with the Needle is a powerful and compelling film that deserves the attention of any lover of quality cinema. [Festival de Cannes 2024] ()
