Gavin Millar tells the story of a philosopher and doctor, Albert Schweitzer, who is portrayed by the leading Dutch actor, Jeroen Krabbé. The director avoided the traps of autobiographical films that try to compress the whole life of a the protagonist into one feature film. Millar does not shirk from controversy in the traditionally narrated portrait, but he focuses on the key moments of Schweitzer's life during the essential period between 1949 and 1954, when Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, but also became the centre of attention of the CIA during the Cold War because of his political opinions, and became undesirable on the battlefield of the world politics.
