Backpack Hero is a cross between a dungeon crawler, a roguelike and a puzzle game. It was developed by an indie studio Jaspel and crowdfunded on Kickstarter.
Plot
Backpack Hero is set in a fantasy world of Orderia, inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. Our playable character sets out on a long, dangerous journey to confront a lurking threat.
Mechanics
Backpack Hero begins with choosing a playable character. Each has a different fighting style, strengths and weaknesses, meaning our choice will affect the course of the game. Our adventure will lead us through ancient dungeons, cave networks and gloomy swamps. The game is a sidescroller, pitting the player through procedurally generated location, against increasingly powerful enemies, having them acquire better gear.
Combat is turn-based, the player needing to focus mostly on their character's equipment. Our items' effectiveness varies on how they're placed in the backpack; we must organize our equipment correctly to reach our maximum combat potential. Arrows should be placed next to our bow, while magic crystals next to the weapon we want them to enhance.
Moments of downtime are set in a town, where we observe our character from the top-down view. We can upgrade the place as we progress, unlocking more content.
Technical aspects
Backpack Hero features simple, yet colorful and appealing pixel art visuals.
