Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a collection of two modernized 8-bit jRPG games featuring a turn-based combat system. They were originally released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1986 and 1987. The remake was handled by Artdink Corporation studio, which collaborated with the publisher Square Enix.
Plot
The collection offers adventures known from Dragon Quest I and Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line in their unchanged form.
In the first part, we play as the hero - Erdrick, whose task is to defeat the Dragonlord. The villain, through an object called the Ball of Light, wants to plunge Alefgard into darkness.
The action of the second installment takes place a hundred years after the events of the first part. Peace prevailed in the land, overseen by three powerful kingdoms. Everything changes when the fallen priest Hargon opens a portal to a demon dimension, which bring destruction with them. This time we take on the role of Prince Midenhall, who is a descendant of the hero from the previous part of the adventure.
Gameplay
The gameplay focuses on exploring the world, which is filled with quests and skirmishes with enemies. The land consists of areas inhabited by enemies of different experience levels, so the development of our character is crucial.
Battles in the game, just like in the originals, take place in turn-based mode. In the first part, these are one-on-one duels with four commands - fight, cast a spell, use an item, and escape. The second installment introduces the possibility of fighting against a larger number of enemies. Additionally, new items and spells have been added, which can be unlocked through character development.
Technical aspects
Compared to the 8-bit originals, both titles gained a new audiovisual layer. It combines classic two-dimensional character graphics with 3D backgrounds enriched with modern visual effects.
