Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the next part of the series of strategy and tactical RPGs, the action of which takes place in fantasy worlds filled with magic. It is the first main game in the series to be released on the Nintendo Switch console. Game was developed once again by the Japanese studio Intelligent System, as well as by Nintendo. Koei Tecmo Games also helped with the development.
Plot
Fire Emblem: Three Houses takes players to a continent called Fódlan, which is controlled by three powerful countries, differing in ideology and political system - Adrestian Empire, Faerghus Kingdom and Leicester Alliance controlled by aristocratic families. The balance between the powers is maintained by the Seiros Church. One method of maintaining a fragile peace is the Garreg Mach Monastery. Situated on land owned by the clergy, the complex is not only a theological center, but also the home of an academy where the most talented young representatives of the three countries learn the art of war.
The main hero or heroine of the game (at the beginning of the game we choose the gender of our character) is a mercenary who is hired as a teacher in Garreg Mach. On the spot, we have to choose a student house of which we will become tutors. The House of the Black Eagles gathers students from the Empire, the Blue Lions are citizens of the Faerghus Kingdom, and under the banner of the Golden Deer the novice officers of Leicester study. We get to know our charges better during the adventure, we help solve their private problems, at the same time we train them and carry out combat missions assigned to us.
Game mechanics
When it comes to game mechanics, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a classical strategy and tactical RPG with a turn-based combat system. The title uses and develops solutions that we could find in previous Fire Emblem games. Gameplay is divided into several segments. In the first one we explore the academy and talk to its students and teachers. In the second one, we decide about the course of training for particular heroes from the chosen student house. In the last one we fight turn-based battles. They are not only simple training maneuvers, but also dangerous encounters, where the stakes are sometimes the lives of our charges.
Battles take place on three-dimensional boards divided by a grid of fields, on which the units we control and enemies move in turns. In combat, characters use swords, spears, axes, bows, fists and various types of spells. Additionally, heroes can ride horses and flying monsters. We decide about equipment and abilities during training sessions, using gained combat experience points.
Technical aspects
Fire Emblem: Three Houses has been developed using a new 3D graphics engine and, for the first time in the history of the series, supports high-resolution visuals. Most dialogues have been fully dubbed, and animated cutscenes accompany the story.
