Hollow Cocoon is a psychological horror adventure game. It was developed by an indie Nayuta Studio, also responsible for another game of the same genre, Cineris Somnia.
Plot
Hollow Cocoon is set in the 1980s Japan. The game's protagonist is Minato Jinba, a young student attending university in a big city. One day, he receives a message from his father, learning his grandmother's dying. Despite resenting the old woman (as she didn't attend the funeral of her daughter, Minato's mother), he decides to travel to the mountain village where she lives, to visit her for the first time since ten years - to see her alive one last time. Upon arrival, Jinba discovers dark forces at play and a roaming bloodthirsty monster. He must fight to survive and learn the truth about what happened in the village.
The game has four different endings, our choices deciding which one we'll see.
Mechanics
Hollow Cocoon is a first-person game. Players must traverse the village, searching for clues regarding the events in the village. While investigating, we're constantly stalked by the monster. Minato can't fight back and must thus avoid it, hiding or running. The game features three difficulty levels, letting us adjust the challenge to our individual preferences.
Technical aspects
Hollow Cocoon features high-quality visuals. The atmospheric, detailed locations may be especially appealing.
