developer: Helena Creative Studios publisher: Astrolabe Games
Moth Kubit, though gameplay-wise seeming like any other 2D RPG, has an unusual premise of insect corporate life. It's the debut game of the small Helena Creative Studios, inspired by works of Franz Kafka.
Plot
The game's protagonist is a moth named Kubit, working in the ranks of a thriving corporation. He just received a promotion, along with some new duties. His objective is to clean up the company's dirts and help his other co-workers before the so-called "Final Process". No one knows what said event will bring - both the company and the world itself are at stake.
The story is told to us via quests and conversations with NPCs. Depending on our choices we'll receive a different ending, changing the tone of the whole story.
Mechanics
The gameplay is shown from a top-down perspective. Kubit can freely move through all the available areas, with the gameplay being divided into several main elements: talking to NPCs, an unusual combat system and puzzles.
Conversing with other insects lets us learn their biographies and problems, gives us information about the corporation and unlocks new quests. At the same time, by exploring the company we can find many items with various purposes to use during certain quests. Learning these stories and leveling up allows us to climb up the corporate ladder and unlocks new options in combat. Battles take form of rhetorical discussions: the more experience we have, the easier it will be to convince our opponent to our cause.
All of this is complemented by numerous mini-games. These range from urging others to improve their behaviour, fixing company equipment or taking care of its financial performance. All mini-games are different, resembling mazes to solve or a stock market version of Flappy Bird.
Technical aspects
The game's graphics have been made with use of pixel art. The insect employees all have diverse designs, and so does the interior architecture of visited areas, similar to rooms usually seen in a typical corporate office building.
