Pillars to Follow Baldur's Gate 3? Josh Sawyer Would Love to Borrow From Larian
Obsidian studio head Josh Sawyer has revealed which elements from Baldur's Gate 3 he would like to include in the next installment of the Pillars of Eternity RPG series, if one were to be created.
Even though Obsidian Entertainment is now fully focused on Avowed, this doesn't prevent the company's head from making plans for the Pillars of Eternity franchise. Indeed, the potential project remains only in the realm of dreams for now, but Josh Sawyer already knows what mechanics he would like to include in the next installment of the highly rated RPG series.
In a recent Q&A the developer organized on his YouTube, a question arose about what elements from Baldur's Gate 3 he would like to include in the new Pillars game. Sawyer said that, in fact, the features that make Larian's game great have already been in other games before, but in BG3 they were better executed. However, what attracted his attention the most was the movement system.
The things that do stand apart in BG3 and that I would like to incorporate into a party-based fantasy game would be movement. Jumping, the ability to fly, basically to move through the terrain, more than just walking around.
Sawyer was also impressed by the dynamism of character interactions in the game, especially with elements of environment.
There's a lot of different things you can do with properties, things being wet or burning. The ability to pick up so many objects and move them around or break through anything.
Obsidian's boss noted that Larian Studios refined these elements because they could use and test them in previous games -- Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel. Sawyer believes that it would be difficult for other creators to simply borrow certain concepts and implement them in their own game with the same quality.
Unfortunately, we shouldn't expect a third installment of Pillars of Eternity for now (just take a look at Sawyer's humorous comments from last year). As I mentioned, Obsidian is currently busy with Avowed, which is slated for release this fall. What will the future bring? Well, a lot depends on the reception of their new game.
