Caltrans District 2 (Redding) is paving the way to safer crossings for our wildlife neighbors with several projects focused on the development and enhancement of wildlife crossings across Northern California. These initiatives are not just about protecting wildlife but also about ensuring the safety of motorists. As part of Caltrans’ commitment to climate adaptation and safety, it’s incorporating wildlife connectivity measures into new road projects. This includes removing barriers created by new infrastructure, ensuring animals can safely cross highways, and reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions. These wildlife crossings are crucial for several reasons. They reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions, enhancing the safety of both motorists and animals. Crossings also allow animals to move freely across their habitats, which is vital for their survival, especially as they adapt to changing climates. District 2 Redding Environmental Office Supervisor, Wesley Stroud, said “As stewards of California's environmental resources, it is our responsibility to ensure our infrastructure supports both human and wildlife communities.” Caltrans’ ongoing and future wildlife crossing projects demonstrate its commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and collaboration. Through strategic planning, partnerships, and innovative design, we are working to create a safer and more connected California for all its inhabitants. 🚛🌱 Caltrans Charges Ahead on Powering a Zero-Emissions Freight Network 🌱🚛 The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $102 million to California, Oregon, and Washington for a groundbreaking initiative: the West Coast Truck Charging and Fueling Corridor Project. This funding will accelerate the installation of charging and hydrogen fueling stations along key freight routes like I-5 to enhance California’s clean transportation infrastructure while boosting export activities. “Focusing on economic prosperity and climate action allows us to combine our sustainability and equity efforts while improving our nation’s transportation network,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares. “This latest federal funding is another opportunity for America’s exports to look west for moving freight while combatting climate change.” Why does this matter? 🚚 Trucks total 6% of vehicles on California’s roads, but they account for over 35% of its transportation-generated emissions of smog-causing nitrogen oxides and a quarter of the state’s on-road greenhouse gas emissions. 🚛 Communities along trucking corridors and near warehouses with heavy truck traffic face disproportionate health burdens due to significantly worst air pollution. 🚚 Interstate 5 connects metropolitan areas, regional highways, and globally important ports, such as the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and the Northwest Seaport Alliance of Seattle and Tacoma. 🚛 Interstate 5 and nearby border highways are also critical to the movement of freight at the borders with Mexico and Canada. 🚧 Stay tuned for updates as construction begins in 2026!
