It’s an exciting time to be an electrical engineer. The discipline sits at the core of some of the most profound innovations of the 21st century, such as quantum computing. Electrical engineers will be critical partners in solving the thorniest technological challenges faced by humanity: how to harness the power of AI; how to mitigate the worst effects of climate change; how to address humanity’s future in space.    For all these reasons, we’re thrilled to announce MIT’s new degree in electrical engineering, 6-5, "Electrical Engineering With Computing".

Every summer since 2021, EECS Associate Professor Justin Solomon has run his Summer Geometry Initiative, a six-week paid summer research program he designed to introduce promising students worldwide to the field of geometry processing. Prof. Regina Barzilay joins BBC host Caroline Steel and other AI experts to discuss her inspiration for applying AI technologies to help improve medicine and fight cancer. “I think that in cancer and in many other diseases, the big question is always, how do you deal with uncertainty? It's all the matter of predictions," says Barzilay. "Unfortunately, today, we rely on humans who don't have this capacity to make predictions. In collaboration with Shivashankar G.V.'s lab at PSI Paul Scherrer Institut at ETH Zürich, Schmidt Center Director Caroline Uhler and Ph.D. student Xinyi Zhang are developing a new combined imaging and #AI approach to improve the staging of breast cancer. “Using #MachineLearning to analyze data can lead to more accurate and simpler solutions for important biological questions, ultimately leading to better disease diagnosis and treatment,” says Uhler. Congratulations to 2024 Horatio Alger Award recipient and MITES alumnus Dale LeFebvre! The award recognizes the achievements of outstanding leaders whose perseverance in the face of adversity personifies the American Dream.    “Dale LeFebvre recognizes the importance of investing in all zip codes for youth to have access to STEM fields because talent is everywhere, but opportunities are not,” said MITES Executive Director Eboney Hearn. “The entire MITES family congratulates Dale on his induction into the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, and we hold him up as an example to all of our scholars of how far their talents can take them.”   Dale participated in MITES in 1988 before earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from MIT. MITES brings together middle and high school students from underrepresented backgrounds to experience STEM through hands-on, collaborative projects alongside a diverse group of STEM professionals, scientists, college students and faculty.   He found success at a number of Wall Street and private equity firms before founding his own privately owned equity investment firm, 3.5.7.11, in 2006, where he currently serves as the executive chairman.   The Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans will induct Mr. LeFebvre and the other ten honorees into the association during an April ceremony in Washington, D.C.
