Fascinating new report on the top universities that graduate startup founders who land funding! Stanford, Harvard, and MIT are at the top of the list, but interesting to see the strength of business schools like Harvard Business School, Stanford Graduate School of Business, and Wharton too. Cambridge University has unveiled a new initiative aimed at translating a greater portion of its research into viable businesses. The objective is to commercialise research outcomes and double the quantity of startups originating from the university's researchers. Diarmuid O'Brien, spearheading this endeavour, expressed the university's intent to streamline the process for researchers to collaborate with Cambridge and promptly receive backing for their concepts, while retaining a significant portion of ownership. In the past, the UK's university system has faced criticism for demanding excessive ownership in startups and for protracted negotiations, leading to the migration of promising ideas to other countries, particularly the US. In a departure from this trend, Cambridge now seeks to secure just 10% ownership stake in new startups, significantly lower than the UK average of 23%. Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Tsinghua University, and Reichman University are the top 3 non-US universities with the highest chances of producing a US unicorn founder.    Any US-based VC-backed startup whose founder is from 𝐈𝐬𝐫𝐚𝐞𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝟐𝟓 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬!    For both Tsinghua University and Reichman University, the odds are 11.3 times the average.    The next are:    INSEAD (8.1x)  Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (6.9x)  Tel Aviv University (5.6x)  The Hebrew University of Jerusalem (3.6x)    University of Cambridge (3.1x)  Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2.8x)  University of Toronto (2.4x).  University of Oxford (2.3x)    What other non-US universities did you expect to see on this list? Stanford University researchers have identified the universities that are most likely to produce a "unicorn" company (valued at $1 billion). Coreform's founders are associated with Brigham Young University, so we were interested to see that BYU makes the list. Correlation doesn't always imply causation... This research aligns with a recent post from Ross Haleliuk (https://lnkd.in/dYqfanCp), highlighting that 13 out of 14 cybersecurity companies acquired in the past year for over $100M were from Israel. But while 5 out of the top 7 universities are Israeli, and my university, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, gives me 6.9x odds to found a US unicorn (😲), it's important to remember that there are many other contributing factors to the Israeli startup success. A small local market driving global focus, Israel's innovative culture, a supportive ecosystem, and mandatory military service (not necessarily in tech if you ask me), among others. #Startup #Innovation #VentureCapital
