Swisscom has defined clear criteria for its investments in climate protection projects, in order to ensure their high quality and integrity:
Reliable CO2 removal: CO2 removal must be scientifically proven and verified.
Ambitious projects: Projects must be certified according to internationally recognised standards and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Diversified portfolio: Project selection is geographically broad-based and includes a sensible mix of different project types.
Connection to Swisscom: The project portfolio should have the best possible connection to Swisscom.
Solar power is being used to replace petrol lamps and reduce greenhouse gases in rural Kenya.
Installing photovoltaic cells on the roofs of Kenyan houses to generate electricity gives families access to light and thus improves living conditions, especially for people in rural areas. The use of solar lighting instead of paraffin lamps has positive effects on their health and leads to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable forestry is stopping erosion and reducing CO2 in Ghana. The goal is to reforest 20,000 ha.
The project is located in the Ashanti region in the north of Ghana, right next to the Asubima Forest Reserve and Afrensu Brohuma Forest Reserve. The area has been severely affected by overuse, bush fires and deforestation. So far, around 3,200 ha have been reforested with teak trees and indigenous tree species. The area is to be expanded by 1,000 ha every year and will eventually cover 20,000 ha of woodland.

One of the largest and most advanced solar power plants in the world generates energy without CO2.
The Cerro Dominador concentrated solar power (CSP) plant generates electricity from solar power using an advanced system of mirrors and molten salts. CSP technology overcomes the disadvantage of conventional solar panels (that they need sunny weather to generate electricity) to provide clean electricity around the clock at a competitive price. This impressive, large-scale CSP project is the first to be successfully verified in Latin America and one of only five in the world.

Thanks to reforestation and management of existing forests by smallholders, CO2 emissions are actively removed from the atmosphere and stored for a set period of time. The project also supports biodiversity and improves livelihoods for local people.
Through conversion to pasture, clear-cutting or arable use, forest areas also disappear in Uganda and become steppe or grassland. By encouraging smallholders in western Uganda to reforest and better manage existing forests, this initiative lays the foundation for long-term sustainable land use: it guarantees the absorption of carbon by the trees and storage in their biomass. This Plan Vivo certified reforestation project works with a large number of smallholder farmers. In addition to climate impact, it also addresses the challenges of poverty and education within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Training smallholders on fire management reduces the risk of forest fires. The project will also establish a micro-credit system to promote income-generating activities based on the sustainable use of forests, as well as capacity building for ecotourism, beekeeping and handicrafts.

Supplying Argentina with renewable wind energy.
Argentina is home to the best wind resources in the western hemisphere, with the Atlantic coast and southern Patagonia experiencing steady wind throughout the year. However, only 5% of the energy needed in Argentina comes from renewable sources. This shows that currently and despite favourable conditions, wind farms in Argentina are not economically viable and this project effectively reduces CO2 emissions.

Avoided deforestation in the Rimba Raya Reserve
Indonesia has lost almost a quarter of its forest area since 1990 and the rainforests of Borneo, as in many tropical regions, are under severe threat. Excessive logging, the extraction of minerals and mineral resources and the production of palm oil and pulp are putting great pressure on the forests. As logging increases, roads and access roads are being built, making previously isolated forest areas easily accessible. As a result, deforestation is progressing ever faster. According to estimates, an area of forest the size of a football pitch is irretrievably lost every minute in the region. The consequences are dramatic: the peat forests in Borneo alone store up to 70 times more carbon than the amount emitted annually by the burning of fossil fuels around the world. Massive logging destroys the CO2 sink potential of the forests and they themselves become a source of CO2 emissions.
The Rimba Raya conservation area is located in the south-east of Borneo and borders Tanjung Puting National Park. The forest area protected as part of the project covers 64,000 hectares. One focus of the project activities is the protection of endangered animal species - including the endangered Bornean orangutan, whose population has declined by 95% over the past century. To this end, the project acquires utilisation rights for areas adjacent to the protected area, which serve as buffer zones. In close cooperation with the local village communities, initiatives for sustainable employment are being developed to benefit the local people. The Rimba Raya project is the first REDD project to be awarded the triple gold certificate in accordance with the recognised CCB standard.

Planting standard fruit trees promotes local biodiversity and carbon storage.
The project with Hochstamm Suisse and myclimate project provides financial support to farmers for planting and maintaining standard fruit trees. The trees absorb CO2 from the atmosphere by storing carbon. They also protect fields from ground erosion and reduce discharge of nutrients and pesticides into groundwater and surface water, as well as providing valuable habitats for diverse species.
