Wikidata:How to create Wikidata Tours/Tour item
Create the tour Wikidata item
[edit]Each tour needs its own dedicated Wikidata item. All data in the item will be deleted each time a user takes the tour, so it's important not to use existing Wikidata items with real data. For example, Earth (Q85408509) is used for the References Tour, this is not the same item as the "real" Earth (Q2).
Create a new blank Wikidata item
[edit]Go to the Create a new Item page and fill out the minimum required data to create a new item. It doesn't matter what you enter here, because the item will be cleared every time the tour is taken. The actual label, description and statements the end user will see is determined by the startup data in your JavaScript file. However, you will need to add a label and/or description, otherwise Wikidata will not allow the item to be created.
Important: Once the new item is has been created successfully, you should complete the next section of this page immediately to prevent your item being deleted or merged into other Wikidata items.
Create a talk page with a Tour Item template
[edit]Navigate to the talk page of the new item you've created and paste in the following:
{{Notice|This item should not be deleted as it is part of the [[Wikidata:Tours#PAGE_ANCHOR|TOUR_NAME tour]]. For more information about guided tours see [[Wikidata:Tours]].}}
{{Notability exemption}}
Replace PAGE_ANCHOR and TOUR_NAME to match the tour which the new Wikidata item is used for.
- PAGE_ANCHOR: This must match the anchor text you assign to the new tour when it's added to the main Wikidata Tours page. It's not involved in the functionality of the tour, it's just a way of linking to the correct section of the tour page.
- TOUR_NAME: This is the simple name used to identify the tour (e.g. "References", "Coordinates", "Official Website" etc), just used as the link text displayed by the template.
Once the details have been entered, click the "Publish page" button to finish creating the talk page with the new template added. If all has been completed correctly, it should look like this live example item for the References tour.
