Advice for Wikidata editing

[edit]

Hi, before continuing to create new items or add new statements, please take a moment to understand how Wikidata works.

  • Avoid using labels like "graphicsProgramming" or "rhetoricalAnalysis". Additionally, refrain from adding an alias that is identical to the label in the same language, and provide a valid description to help users understand what the item exactly represents. Please take a careful read Help:Label, Help:Description, and Help:Alias.
  • Be aware that distinct items may have similar labels but different meanings. In several edits, it appears you selected the first item matching the desired label without checking it had the exact meaning you intended. Always check that the item accurately reflects your intended meaning.
  • When creating a new item, ensure you include all necessary information to correctly define it and disambiguate it from other items. This involves more than just providing a label and an external identifier. Also, check if another item with the same meaning already exists.
  • Also, it is quite unlikely that all the items that you marked as subclasses of scholarly method (Q17079481) are such. You included a wide range of very different things, and many of them are way more abstract concepts than just a "scholarly method". Instead, since it seems you are importing all such data from a specific source, the subclass of (P279)-hierarchy that you are going to produce should reflect the one depicted in that source (like I have done here).

If you have any doubts, please do not hesitate to contact me. --Horcrux (talk) 10:03, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
thank you for the tips. Absolut valid first point, I've not paid close enough attention to that. I will try to do so in the future.
Regarding your other points... I tried to be careful and making sure that the items corresponded to my intended Tadirah categories. However, I see with the item "Preprocessing" that the Tadirah ID was added incorrectly even before I worked with it. As it was marked as already matched in my worksheet, I hadn't re-checked it. But again, you're right that it wasn't assigned correctly.
So, I am working on the project Wikidata:WikiProject DH Tool Registry and we are trying to transfer the Tadirah taxonomy to Wikidata. Unfortunately, some of the 168 Tadirah categories do not have a meaningful description even on the Tadirah website, so I could not add a more meaningful description here.
As part of the ToolRegistry that we are trying to build, we have classified all Tadirah categories that represent the methods as a subclass of scholarly method. Isabell0409 (talk) 10:20, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of duplicate statements for "Tapor" URLs

[edit]

Hi, with your latest automated edits you have created a lot of duplicate described at URL (P973) statements, for example Perl (Q42478), Plotly (Q17146476) or Yahoo! Pipes (Q908747). Could you clean this up please? --Haansn08 (talk) 14:30, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the notice! I'll take care of it. Isabell0409 (talk) 13:37, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Described at Tapor

[edit]

Hi Isabell0409, you added P973=https://tapor.ca/tools/821 to Q936. But at that page I see no description of OpenStreetMap, as a matter of fact I see no data at all. Am I missing something? Ivanbranco (talk) 21:39, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the input! I have been working with a larger list of tools from Tapor (and others). The data was collected in November 2022 and apparently not all links are correct anymore. So it seems that the page here that the link refers to has since been deleted. I will go ahead and delete the addition to Q936. Isabell0409 (talk) 09:12, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

descriptions

[edit]

Hello, I'm Jamie7687. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent description edits to Q126085074 didn't meet the Wikidata description guidelines. Descriptions should appear as though they were in the middle of a sentence, typically start with a lowercase letter, and written from a neutral point of view. For example, "pop singer" would be a better description than "He is the best pop singer." If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks!  Jamie7687 (talk) 17:40, 18 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Notability

[edit]

Thank you for contributing to Wikidata. I see that you recently created an item Q126084761 that does not clearly indicate its notability. The Wikidata project only accepts items that meet its notability criteria, and your item is therefore likely to be deleted soon. In brief, items must have an associated Wikipedia article, must be needed for statements on another notable item, or must have both identifiers and serious sources. For the last case, a good indication of notability would be multiple articles about the subject in independent publications like newspapers or magazines. You can add such sources as references to specific claims using reference URL (P854), or as top-level claims using described at URL (P973).

Also, this may not apply in this specific case, but you should know that we discourage editors from contributing on topics with which they have a strong personal connection, as this may present a conflict of interest. If you are being paid to edit here, then you are obliged to disclose this. For a longer version, you might find it useful to read the essay "How to create an item on Wikidata so that it won't get deleted".  William Graham (talk) 21:14, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
