Supermassive Games Fires 90 Developers
The layoffs sweeping the industry have not spared Supermassive Games studio. The company, known for horror games like Until Dawn and The Quarry, has fired 90 employees.
The British studio Supermassive Games has become part of a large number of companies that have laid off some of their employees in the past few months. However, for this developer, it isn't a minor staff reduction, but rather a significant purge of positions.
- Jason Schreier, an industry journalist, reported on Bloomberg about the firing of 90 employees from the studio, known for hits like Until Dawn and The Quarry.
- According to Schreier, the company informed 150 developers yesterday (i.e. February 26, 2024) that they are "at risk of being laid off."
- A total of 300 people were employed in the Supermassive Games team, which is part of Nordisk Games. As a result of this wave of layoffs, the team decreased by 30%.
- A few minutes after Schreier's article was published, the British studio released a statement on X. The statement reads: "This is not a decision that's been taken lightly, with many efforts made to avoid this outcome."
The developer's message also addressed the issue of titles currently being developed.
We're committed to focusing our efforts on our core strengths and upcoming titles to ensure the continued sustainability of the company -- as it was written.
The Supermassive Games studio is currently working on, among other things, the platform game Little Nightmares III and Directive 8020, which is the next installment of The Dark Pictures Anthology. A refreshed edition of Until Dawn is set to be released this year for PlayStation 5 and PC, although it isn't being developed by the British team.
