"There's no point, no purpose! There's no plan, brothers and sisters. No playbook King James or otherwise. Preying on fears. Since he won't do a damn thing. 'Cause the good Lord only helps those who help themselves. So, save your prayers, your candles. Save your pleas in the dark of night. They make no difference to him."
―Francis Xavier Delgado[src]

Father Francis Xavier Delgado is a priest and former history teacher at St. Sebastian's Preparatory School.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Alcoholism[]

Francis Xavier Delgado was an alcoholic who became sober through his fear of killing his family while drunk driving. Due to this fear, he became a priest to help people.[1]

Becoming a Priest[]

Counseling Tyrone Johnson[]

"Then why not tell me about it?"
"Because I I knew what you'd say."
"And what's that?"
"The same thing you've been saying for the last three years."
―Francis Xavier Delgado and Tyrone Johnson[src]

Following his brother's death, Tyrone Johnson sought counseling from Delgado due to his anger over the murder. Three years later, Johnson had punched a kid during a basketball game. Delgado talked to him again about his anger issues. Johnson claimed that if he found the person that murdered Billy, he would seek revenge. Afterwards, Delgado performed mass in front of his church peers. The choir than sang.

Hours later, Delgado watched as Johnson did suicide sprints as a self-punishment for missing practice. Delgado looked at him proudly before tossing him a towel. At the store, Delgado witnessed a woman buying wine. He eventually gave in to his past addiction and asked for an O'Harren's Scotch Whisky.[2]

Hero's Journey[]

"Okay, let's talk about what makes a hero. Now, as we've been discussing for the last few weeks, the best heroes, the ones we love and cherish, they follow an arc."
―Francis Xavier Delgado[src]

While also being one of the counselors inside in St. Sebastian, Father Delgado was also in charge of one of the courses in the school. In one of the classes, Father Delgado explained the theory behind the hero's journey, with a graphical example of the steps that these characters tend to follow.

Afterwards, Tyrone Johnson had gotten into another fight. Delgado asked him questions about the War of 1812 and talked about how no one knew when to stop fighting. He then made Johnson stand still holding two books with his arms stretched out. When he returned from his next class, Johnson was still standing there. Delgado asked if he was ready to talk. Johnson ridiculed Delgado about his life and religion. Delgado assured him he didn't come to church to hide, but to find answers. Johnson claimed that God doesn't know him and God doesn't exist. Johnson tried to go, but Delgado stopped him. Johnson then swung only to miss and get put into a choke hold by Delgado.

Suddenly, Delgado saw his fear, drunk driving and being responsible for a crash that would kill his daughter. A scared Delgado let go of Johnson and told him to go right away. Delgado was left almost breaking down in tears.[1]

Visit at Johnson Residence[]

Delgado visited Otis and Adina Johnson after Tyrone Johnson ran away from home for being sought by the NOPD after being blamed for assassination. While praying silently, Delgado looked the cops questioning Otis.[3]

Returning to Alcohol[]

Quitting[]

Feeling that he failed Tyrone Johnson, Delgado quit his job. As he walked out, he was approached by Detective Brigid O'Reilly who asked him if he got fired. Delgado admitted that he should have been. She then asked about Johnson, but Delgado refused to answer as he thought she wanted to hurt him. She clarified that she wanted to help him, but he did not care. As he walked away, O'Reilly told him that Johnson did not kill James Connors, but Delgado told her it did not matter.[4]

Trying to Fight his Addiction[]

Delgado stood outside of a liquor store, trying to fight the urge to go in. Brigid O'Reilly approached him, wanting to confess, but he reminded her that he was not longer a priest. She then urged him to buy some alcohol, referencing Paul Revere. However, Delgado refused. O'Reilly went on, talking about how she wanted to kill. Delgado told her to start with the people who deserved it. As she walked away, she handed him a bottle of alcohol.[4]

Drunken Public Speaking[]

Delgado stood outside Glitter Gutter Club with a bottle of O'Harren's Scotch Whisky in his hand. He yelled at people. He then fell off his stool into the ground. Brigid O'Reilly approached him once again, telling him to bless her as she will sin. She then handed him his bottle before leaving. Delgado continued to yell at people about how nothing mattered and there was only despair.[4]

Confession from Adina Johnson[]

Delgado was by his house one day when Adina Johnson came by to confess. Delgado repeatedly told her that he was no longer a priest, it was a life, not a job, and he failed that life. She eventually convinced him to take her confession. They sat down with a divider between them. Johnson proceeded to confess that she was helped by James Connors, the man who killed Billy Johnson and framed Tyrone Johnson. She explained how she got information from Connors and then murdered him. Delgado grew angry that she confessed to a murder. She left him a file saying to protect Tyrone.[5]

Restarting[]

Delgado eventually found an old, rundown church that Tyrone Johnson lived for the last several months. Johnson left a note for Delgado, urging him to use the church to become a priest again and reclaim his life back. Delgado listened to him and started rebuilding and cleaning up.[6]
