This anime has characters that show extreme personality traits. Usually, the more extreme or different the world, the less it feels out of place. The world of this show is quite real, so the way a handful of characters are introduced and shown to the viewer is way over the top. Characters that are lost between love-obsession, determination-desperation and rules-norms (some self-imposed). Still, the show has some captivating moments, episodes and storylines. The animation delivers at times some great details and gorgeous artwork.
On the weaker aspects of the show. A lot of the conflict is based on bad communication, some events and storylines fall off. And lost people are doing lost things is after more and more episodes not quite enough for me.

Misonoo Nanako is a professor's daughter looking forward to her first day of school at the prestigious Seiran Academy, a girl's only school that caters to the rich, or in her case, those with high test scores. She soon finds that the school is polarized by three popular and talented individuals, known as the Magnificent Three, and known by their nicknames: "Kaoru no Kimi", a boyish, but talented sports player named after a character in The Tale of Genji, "Saint-Juste", a flamboyant pianist named for a French Revolutionary character, and "Miya-sama", the president of the Seiran Sorority, an elite group of the most beautiful and talented girls of the school. Though Nanako doesn't intend to make waves as a student at this school, when she is tabbed to be a member of the Sorority, the brutal politics that run beneath the surface of the school's sophisticated veneer soon threaten to pull Nanako's life into chaos, and her world becomes one where she is unsure of her friends, her enemies, and her very identity... and the only way she can vent her emotions is through her correspondence letters to a man she calls her "Dear Brother". This series is based on the manga created by Ikeda Ryoko, who also created The Rose of Versailles.

This anime was definitely worth the watch for me! It is a dark, intriguing, and thought-provoking anime with some warmness thrown into it. It shows the dark-side of a lauded and respected female only school. It has some extremely original and unconventional characters, touches some dark and deep themes such as: drug adiction, lesbianism, bullying, mental disorders, etc. Must watch if you find the description interesting!

It's about shockingly concealed character flaws, obsessive behavior, warped emotions due to childhood trauma, and the pervasive fear of a world filled with powerful, unpredictable, neurotic people who can either hurt you or help you based on their whims which you have no hope of understanding... and then there is that terrifying realization you get, that your entire emotional world is based on things which are so fragile that they can be a matter of a whim. This is a very "right-brained" show. Kind of an "emotional X-files". It's a gothic psychological horror series -- made without any of the usual things we associate with gothic horror. It's unique. It's an art anime, so take your time. Not for light background viewing. The paintings remind me of Miyazaki or Takahata films.

This is #1 cult anime I've ever known. Let alone Utena, the subways in Director Ikuhara Kunihiko's recent works Penguindrum stand for similar meanings after this one, which both are huge element of each story. (requires processes of perception and cognition for organic combination of whole story)

Honestly one of the best JOSEI series ever made. This is NOT for little girls. The themes are too strong for anyone under 16 in my opinion.
