Despite being a standard harem show at heart, surprisingly serious character arcs and lots of (often funny) stuff going on in the backgrounds.
Date a Live is funny mostly because of how commited it is to its jokes. They really hammer them home, which might not be elegant, but it sure is effective.
An example by comparison:
Normal, weak romcom: Protagonist juggles 2 dates simultaneously
Date a Live, not fucking around: Add a third with a bloodthirsty monster who eats people and then juggle them nonstop for over 5 hours
And everyone is deadpan serious about the protagonist seducing spirits with no knowledge, training or gear, while they themselves engage them with full military equipment, airships, tanks, the works.
While feeding him conversation options like in a dating sim, but all the options are terrible. It's comedy gold. Watch it if you have any kind of tolerance for the genre.
tl,dr: Literally "make love not war" by way of harem comedy.

Still confused, several girls in combat suits, the Anti-Spirits Team (AST), among them his genius of a classmate Tobiichi Origami, attack Tooka. Shidou loses consciousness, awakening in sickbay, on board the Fraxinus, a floating ship located 15,000 metres above Tenguushi City.
The commander of this ship and the ongoing operation is none other than Shidou's sister Kotori! As she explains, when the Spirits drop down to Earth, this usually ends in a Spacequake occurrence. There are only two ways to stop a Spirit: one is to go on the offensive and kill it (rarely succeeds), the other, of all things, is to go on a date with the Spirit girl... and that will be Shidou's responsibility!

Lots of cute girls, nice action and I really like the art, but the show mishandles the mix of comedy and drama (life and death) scenarios. Even for a Harem anime the MC is completely useless. He and the show completely fail to address the threat of a dangerous psychopath, who just casually hangs out with them, while also actively trying to murder them. You can't have your cake and eat it too: Something like this only works when it is entirely played for laughs. It makes no sense for everyone to tolerate her presence if she's actually dangerous. This idiocy is then used for cheap drama. It's painful to watch.

Typical middle-school-aged harem with ecchi thrown in for hooks. The concept's good, the _plot_ is ok, but the execution is lacking. Someone had a good idea and the producers decided to tweak it. That's my vibe. It's an ok watch if you like teenaged action/adventure thrown in with your saccharin lolis. At the very least, the artwork's good and the female characters are really cute. The list of seiyuu is also interesting. Some well-rounded individuals in the mix. Now if only they had put at least this much effort into DAL II.

Seriously i was SO confused by this anime! To be more precise the story starts in a quite serious tone, transitioning to a more lighthearted approach (which is typical for comedy/action/romance anime) All that in episode 1 mind you ! THen suddenly the plot thickens again, only to get thrown back to it's easy-going pace once more! It's like the creators couldn't quite decide if they wanted to make the audience take them very seriously or simply enjoy some slapstick comedy with a mild addition of action! That whole approach kinda threw me off! Still the character development was nicely presented which i liked, the characters themselves were adorable (even the notorious tsundere archetype!) and the romance , although overshadowed by the harem setting, is quite there and quite sweet! For the latter reasons this is recommended to action/comedy/romance fans
