In Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Sephiroth appears alongside his iconic sword, Masamune, but only when he's in battle. When he's out in the field, the huge blade disappears, unlike other weapons in the game, like Cloud's Buster Sword.

It turns out that there is both a practical and in-universe explanation for this. In a recent interview with Famitsu, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura admits that he thought depicting Sephiroth with Masamune on his back was "unnatural". But he also says that he always intended for there to be a lore reason behind the disappearing sword, which will now be explained in the mobile game, Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis.

"As for Masamune, I was actually consulted about how to handle [it] in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth," says Nomura. "It would be unnatural to have him in the open all the time while moving around the field, and he couldn't carry it on his back like Cloud, so we were like, 'What should we do?'
