Title
[edit]Would "Fallout 3 add-ons" (or similar) not be more appropriate, as this content is available other than by download? MisterVodka (talk) 20:54, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'm fine with a re-title, I just needed a place to put article. I would say whatever the standard is would be what we should go with. --Teancum (talk) 22:16, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
- I believe that in all of the interviews they have been referred to as DLCs by the developers but they are labeled as "Add-ons" in the boxed editions. I'd say that due to the marketing materials referring to them as add-ons, it might be the better actual title (though downloadable content should obviously still link to the page). UncannyGarlic (talk) 06:33, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, I more meant the standard that Wikipedia would have. I would almost prefer to use "Fallout 3 expansions" as that's more along the lines of WP standards. --Teancum (talk) 12:27, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
- Actually I think that "expansions" is the wrong title as they specifically said that they were doing smaller projects rather than full expansions and have labeled those products as both "Downloadable Content" and, now that it's packaged, "Add Ons". Notice that Knights of the Nine was labeled as "Downloadable Content Collection" while Shivering Isles was labeled as an "Expansion Pack". I'd guess that the reason the boxed versions of the DLCs are labeled "Add-On"s instead of DLC is for marketing purposes (reduce consumer confusion). There is also the matter of how Bethesda talked about the packs while they were being released and how they compare to previous releases, they specifically said that they weren't full expansions [1][2]. I'd argue that there is a devision in size in what is labeled as expansion packs and what is labeled as something else (different studios use different names), in this case DLCs or add-ons. I like standardized terminology but I don't know of a standard term in the industry for this size of expansions. I'm inclined to use the label they use on their packaging, "Add-On", for that reason. UncannyGarlic (talk) 08:49, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
- I'd go with add-on myself, it's what's on the can. Well, "game add-on pack" but that's a little long winded. Rehevkor ✉ 15:47, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

There's no official title for the pack really, so I went with what I thought would best suit Wikipedia. --Teancum (talk) 23:44, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
- Are you saying that their is no official title for the this type/size of pack (as there is for "Expansion Packs") or that the Fallout 3 add-ons don't have an official title? Are there wiki guidelines on how to classify things? UncannyGarlic (talk) 07:06, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Yeah, basically I couldn't find anything that gave an official title to the expansions as a group, so I tried to come up with something that was more along Wikipedia standards. Couldn't find a whole lot there either, as some games have the DLC as part of the main article, but a few have them as separate articles for each DLC. As there wasn't really a need to create five different articles I lumped them together, and used the most generic, yet universal word I could find, expansions - the reason I used that word is because of an existing category, Category:Video game expansion packs and an existing article Expansion pack. Add-on ended up being a disambiguation page that didn't even mention software addons, so I nixed that idea. Add-on is also a gamer's term, and I wanted to avoid any jargon that non-gamers wouldn't understand. --Teancum (talk) 10:47, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Actually the disambiguation page for Add-on states, "an optional computer hardware or software component that, if installed, significantly supplements or enhances the functionality of the original unit," and lists Mozilla Add-ons (though they are different beasts). Still, the general description is accurate to what the Fallout 3 Add-Ons are, even if it is extremely general and vague. I'd also argue that "add-on" is a pretty self-explanatory term but I think it all comes back to the issue of whether or not there is a standardized name for this size of expansion. Heck, the expansion pack page describes expansion packs as add-ons. I guess it comes down to whether to use the label on the box or something slightly less accurate but possibly less confusing. It'd be helpful to get a non-gamer's opinion on this. UncannyGarlic (talk) 02:55, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

Response to third opinion request ( Disagreement over the appropriate title for the page. ): |
I am responding to a third opinion request for this page. I have made no previous edits on Fallout 3 expansions and have no known association with the editors involved in this discussion. The third opinion process is informal and I have no special powers or authority apart from being a fresh pair of eyes. |
It looks like there is a good deal of ambiguity over the definitions of "add-on" and "expansion pack" - not just on Wikipedia, but generally. From the reading I have done while researching this question, it seems to me reasonable to say that an "add-on" is any hardware or software component that enhances a game, while an "expansion" actually "expands" the game play itself e.g. by adding extra levels, extra vehicles in a racing simulator, etc. "Add-on" is a general term, and "expansion" is a more specific term. So all expansions are add-ons, but not all add-ons are expansions. For example, you might reasonably describe a yoke-type joystick as an "add-on" to flight simulator, but it's obviously not an expansion. If you agree with me so far, let's try one step further. A downloadable software component for a driving simulator that let you listen to your own MP3s while playing, and control the music from the car's virtual dashboard, would obviously be an add-on. I don't think it would be an expansion though, because the actual game itself would be no larger or more interesting. From reading the article, it's clear that the "Fallout 3 expansions" do actually increase the scope of the game, so under the definition I'm proposing, they are in fact expansions. From what I can see this use of the word "expansions" is consistent with what's already in Wikipedia under Expansion Pack and with the very general, inclusive definition given for Add-on. The fact that the developer calls these expansions "add-ons" isn't very persuasive to me - the words are so close in meaning that it's hard to imagine someone being confused by the difference. So in all, it's my opinion that "expansions" is a preferable title to "add-ons" for this article. Why not think about setting up a redirect from "Fallout 3 add-ons" to here though?—Thparkth (talk) 00:20, 3 January 2010 (UTC) |
Screenshots
[edit]Anyone think that maybe some more screenshots should be added in? Either taken by a player or found on the internet. One or two for each add-on seems like a good amount. 71.169.189.21 (talk) 02:03, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
- Can't really use that many copyrighted images. I'd say two is about the limit, which are already present.. Rehevkor ✉ 19:17, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Accidental spoiling
[edit]In the Broken Steel section, there is a spoiler for the end of the main game. There is no warning for this.
If the player personally activates Project Purity, their character no longer dies but instead wakes up after a two-week coma to join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and helps rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave once and for all.
Specifically;
If the player personally activates Project Purity, their character no longer dies
I am not sure what to replace this with, so I didn't edit it myself. 92.26.210.94 (talk) 17:11, 29 November 2015 (UTC)
