Plans
[edit]Critter of the Week Task Force
[edit]The Critter of the Week (CotW) project has been a great science outreach success, and Wikipedia support has been an important part of that. Currently the "critters" discussed each week have their Wikipedia presence enhanced at short notice by an ad hoc team of volunteers. The goal of this meetup is to set up a CotW Task Force, with editors actively recruited and asked to commit to assisting each week. The Task Force would liaise with DOC's CotW coordinator in scheduling critters ahead of time, with time to source photos and research new articles when needed. The Task Force would also promote CotW on social media. Volunteers could receive small rewards for continued dedicated participation: a virtual Critter medal, or even DOC or RNZ merchandise such as a Critter teatowel.

Report
[edit]- As part of her Wikidata work on female science illustrators Ambrosia10 is liaising with the Universität Stuttgart Database of Scientific Illustrators, concerned that their upcoming server shift may break URLs.
- Two DOC staffers were able to attend, so we discussed a better workflow for Critter of the Week, with notifications for the Critter Task Force of upcoming species to help planning and securing photos
- Task Force members should post suggestions for future critters with links to media coverage and justifications for why the species is a good candidate.
- We also discussed the state of the DOC image library, and how much of it might be able to be released into Commons. The photographs donated by Philip J. Moors of the Subantarctic Islands was suggested as a manageable collection of about 1000 scanned slides that would work as a test case.
