- In a nutshell: an extremely successful mix of genres and graphics styles
What's Children of Morta about?
We're dealing with a real mix of genres. Children of Morta is not only an RPG – there are elements of a roguelike, hack'n'slash fight and a narrative similar to traditional adventure games. The developers did not limit themselves to rigid frameworks of specific genres and give their work its own, unique character.
In Children of Morta we play members of the Bergson family who live on the slope of the eponymous mountain and have guarded it for many generations. Unfortunately, a mysterious force whose source lies beneath this mountain disturbs the peace of the area, and the Bergsons must act to contain that chaos. As we control each of the heroes, we explore the procedurally-generated levels to find the seeds of life and stop the evil forces.
Why is it worth playing?
The best thing about Children of Morta is how neatly it combines several genres. The game draws on roguelikes, while giving up the most annoying element for many players, i.e. the loss of skills and experience upon each death. In Children of Morta, failure doesn't mean that our characters become weaker, so we can focus on their development and use the skills to traverse the next dungeon.
The graphics style of this game also deserves a mention. Children of Morta draws primarily from the titles of the 1980s and 90s, opting for retro-style visuals. However, it seasons the graphics with completely modern effects and animations, which, combined with simple pixels, gives a unique, beautiful effect. The game isn't long, because it takes up to several hours to complete it. Thanks to this, the PS Plus Premium offer stands out as a small, original gem that's worth giving a chance.
