You should take interest in the Cap Collector perk - Fallout 4: How to quickly gather large numbers of bottlecaps? - FAQ - Fallout 4 Game Guide & Walkthrough
You should take interest in the Cap Collector perk

Bottlecaps are the official currency in Fallout 4 game. Similarly to most other RPGs, you will always have not enough of them. It's especially troublesome during the initial phase of the game, when you can't afford even medium quality weapon and ammunition for your weapons. On this page you will find many hints on how to earn money legally, without using any exploits which sooner or later will be removed with patches.

  • The most obvious way to obtain bottlecaps is by finding them in the game world. Look especially for chests in which you can find up to few dozens of bottlecaps. It is a good idea to take interest in the Fortune Finder perk early in the game. You should quickly develop it to the second level (of four possible). This perk will guarantee that you will find more bottlecaps in a container or near enemy body than usually.
  • One of the best ways to quickly get rich is by getting rid of all unneeded items you found at the merchants. Try to explore visited locations thoroughly and collect mostly items of great value. However, don't rush your first visits at merchants, first you should develop the Cap Collector perk (you can unlock first of three levels at the beginning of the game). This perk guarantees you better prices at merchants, allowing you to receive more bottlecaps for the same unneeded equipment. Important - the most valuable items to sell should be stashed in a container in the settlement or in companion's inventory until you unlock higher levels of this perk.
  • Completing quests isn't a very profitable job in Fallout 4 if you consider how badly you are rewarded for that. Even in case of larger quests, usually you can't count on receiving more than 100-200 bottlecaps. If you play as a character with highly developed Charisma, then very frequently you can bargain with the questgiver about the size of payment. In such cases, it is wise to save the game before you do it, as a failed persuasion attempt cannot be repeated.
  • Later in the game you can start selling Bobbleheads and magazines you found, as the statistic boost you receive from them are never lost. The only exception is when you plan to build a place where you will be keeping your collection. Later in the game you can also think about getting rich by developing settlements and creating connections between them, but more about that can be found in a separate chapter of this guide.
