Settlements in Fallout 4 are places in which you can stock resources needed for building various structures. Settlements can provide you with food and access to drinkable water, you can sleep in them and they are fully modifiable. Obtaining and expanding them is also related to buying and selling items in selected shops and to creating supply routes that allow obtaining supplies stocked in workshops.

All locations that can serve as settlements are shown on the above map. In some cases, in order to gain access to a fully functional settlement, you will have to complete a side quest.

Creating settlements is a completely new gameplay feature in Fallout series.

Complete the Sanctuary quest in order to learn the very basics of creating settlements. During that quest you will learn how to build a settlement and provide the settlers with everything they need to survive.

In further chapters you will learn more details related to matters described in that quest. Most of all you will learn about the basics of crafting, settlement management, building settlements' various elements and finding resources that are required for creating larger constructions.
