The mechanics in Frostpunk 2 are slightly different from those of the first game, so even veterans may be a bit confused when starting their first playthrough. On this page of our guide you will find some tips that will help you get started with the game and build a self-sufficient city.

Always be doing something

Try to never waste time - there is always something to do in the game. First of all, you should always conduct research and vote as soon as the previous one is finished. If you have excess manpower, order them to break ice towards new resources or around districts to make room for expansion.

Take advantage of active pause

The game enables you to stop or speed up time at any time. You are then free to perform all available activities - build, work on the research tree, etc. Always use active pause when you are about to do something - you can speed up time when you have to wait for something.

Save your game often in separate slots

Frostpunk 2 is a game in which the consequences of mistakes may only become apparent many hours later. Save your game frequently in separate slots so that you can go back to an earlier period of the game in case of catastrophic problems. Saves will also come in handy when making decisions - the game doesn't let you see the situation in the city or the amount of resources you have when you're making the toughest decisions, so in the event of a mistake or miscalculation, you can backtrack a bit.

Secure external sources of raw materials

The city's sources of raw materials are limited. As the game progresses, they will be depleted - although you will also find infinite sources of raw materials in the game, their exploitation requires a building that can be unlocked on only one path of the game. It is therefore very important to explore the territory outside the city - build logistics districts and send scouts on expeditions to find resources, cores, people and places for outposts that will provide you with a constant inflow of a given resource.

Expand districts

City building has undergone major changes. Now, instead of single structures, you build entire districts. Initially they consist of six adjacent tiles, so you need a lot of space to create a district. Districts can also be expanded twice by three spaces if you have the space for them - this enables you to cover more deposits with one district.

Additionally, you can place buildings in districts, the former can be unlocked through research. They have different effects but always bring a positive impact on the district, for example by increasing its production of raw materials. However, this requires you to expand the district - each expansion unlocks a new space for a building.

Research new technologies

Like in the first part, the research tree is extremely important, although it works a bit differently here - almost every building/upgrade on the research tree has several variants supported by different factions. So you have to choose the options according to your preferences. Always conduct research and start again as soon as the previous research is finished. Building more research institutes will shorten the time to complete them. Occasionally you will also come across notifications recommending that you undertake specific research - do so as it shows what your city needs at the moment.

Negotiate before voting

Implementing laws is extremely important, as they give you passive bonuses that have quite significant effects. However, in order to introduce them, a certain number of delegates at the town hall must vote in favor of their implementation. There are several ways to pass the desired laws, such as increasing the number of delegates of your preferred faction, but the simplest way is through negotiations - in exchange for making one of the three available promises, you can convince the members of the wavering faction to vote according to your preference. However, you must then fulfill that promise or risk losing your reputation and trust, so try to choose promises that seem useful to you.

Check the forecasts

The lower the temperature, the greater the heat demand. Fuel consumption also increases. Keep an eye on the indicator in the upper right corner of the screen, which displays upcoming temperature changes - thanks to it, you will be able to react in time and prepare for colder days.

Pay attention to the city's problems

At the top of the screen are five black balls that show the problems the city faces: cold, hunger, disease, squalor, and crime. During the early stages of the game you'll only have to deal with one or two of them, but events at the end of Chapter 2 will likely force you to deal with all of them at once. Don't ignore these problems and in your free time research buildings that will reduce them.
