Super Mario RPG is a remake of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, a role-playing game from 1996 released on the SNES. Mario, Bowser and other heroes of the series join forces in an unusual alliance to rebuild the Star Road and deal with Smithy's gang. The game is heavily based on the original, but introduces modern mechanics and colorful, impressive visuals.
Plot
The game starts with Mario once again assaulting Bowser's castle to save the kidnapped Princess Peach. His moment of triumph is interrupted by a giant sword, Exor. The gigantic blade strikes the fortress, sending the heroes flying all around the world and shattering the Star Road, disabling its wish-granting powers.
It soon turns out Exor is but a member of a gang of sentient weapons, led by the villainous Smithy. Mario therefore gathers a party to find Princess Peach, rebuild the Star Road and deal with the invaders.
Mechanics
Super Mario RPG is an isometric game revolving around exploration and combat. It features many diverse locations, including Mushroom Kingdom, Monstro Town and Moleville.
Though an RPG, it also contains numerous platforming elements. There's plenty of jumping over lava pits, climbing huge vines, swimming and even dinosaur riding. Aside from that we'll get to gather coins, break blocks and participate in mini-games, such as racing.
Combat in Super Mario RPG is turn-based - players can use regular attacks and special skills with various effects, such as healing or hurling turtle shells at enemies. At first Mario's our only party member, but he's soon joined by Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Princess Peach. Each character has different stats and abilities. We can have up to three party members at once.
Technical aspects
The game's soundtrack was composed by Yoko Shimomura, known for her work on Kingdom Hearts, Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy XV and the original Super Mario RPG.
The remake features colorful 3D visuals and cinematic cutscenes during the game's most important moments.
